Erisca - I think I see what's going on here.

The confusion appears to be over semester hours vs. quarter hours. Basically, I think you are comparing apples and oranges.

When a school operates on quarter system, rather than semster system, then you are looking at approximately 180 quarter hours for a bachelor's degree.
When you are dealing with a school that operates on a semester system, then you are looking at approximately 120 semester hours for a bachelor's degree.

People get these confused because they substitute the word "credits" to mean both "semester hours" and "quarter hours". Sounds like the person you talked to was confused as well.

Kaplan and APU are similar in a lot of ways. APU takes up to 90 semester hours in transfer for their bachelor's degree - that's roughly 75% of the credits for the degree. If you compare that to Kaplan, my guess (and it is only a guess) is that they take somewhere in the neighborhood of 135 credits (quarter hours) in transfer toward their bachelor's degrees (at 180 quarter hours). (For what it's worth, Kaplan does operate on the quarter hour system, and according to their website, their undergraduate tuition is $353 per quarter hour.)

APU courses (my wife is a student at APU / I'm a student at AMU, their sister school) are $250 per semster hour for undergraduate courses -- that's $750 per course. I know that the $50 fee may seem like a pain, but that's the only fee we've paid so far -- seriously -- there are no technology fees or anything like that.

Quater hours vs. Semester hours (and maybe someone else more knowledgeable can chime in here) - one isn't better than another, and one isn't more work than another -- it's just two different ways of measuring things - kind of like the metric system.

BS in Web Development/Web Multimedia and Animation - Online College or Universities?

Hello, I am active duty military and get tuition assistance. I am trying to pursue an online degree in Web Multimedia and Animation or Website Development. In the near future I want to open a Website Designer Business to create websites mainly for christian organizations (churches, non-profit organizations, and outreach ministries) to help increase their ministries.

Does anybody have any advice as too which online college or online university is trustworthy and a good choice? Does anyone have any idea how do I get a Website Design License to be able to create websites legally?

I tried Kaplan Online University, but found a lot of recent crooked reports in www.ripoffreport.com. I saw over 20 different reports stating that Kaplan is ripping off people constantly. It is a good thing I did my research before I enrolled into the college.

Maybe you guys know some other colleges or universities that are honest and trustworthy. I want to make sure I use my Military Tuition Assistance wisely.

Affordable online DBA (or PhD in Business/Management)

Hi!

Nice knowledge-base and community you have here. I have read many posts and topics but I still couldn't find the education program that suits my priorities. Can you please recommend me one (or a few) in the fields of Business Administration or Management?

First of all, I'd like to study online, so I'm looking for a distant learning program on the doctorate level. I'm from Eastern Europe so programs without residency are strongly preferred, but once-twice visits still could be feasible. I'm not fooled by 'life experience' degrees so I'm definitely not going after such diploma, but an accelerated pace (maximum 2 years) would be a huge advantage, as long as the university is accredited by some honorable body. I'm not an expert on such accreditation agencies so whatever college/university you recommend I trust that it's no diploma mill. The last criterion is the price. Unfortunately I cannot afford a US online DBA of 10.000-40.000 $ based on my wage level. So I would be perfectly satisfied with an affordable online DBA /PhD from a recognized university in India, Hongkong, Thailand, South Africa or any other part of the world. Certainly higher international ranking (and therefore recognition) would be a benefit among such universities, but only as long as they offer a cheap, accredited distant learning program that doesn't take more than 4 semesters.

Good BS IT degree program?

Hello, all!

I'm currently attending Capella University for my BS in Computer Science, but I'm less than impressed with their setup. It's extremely difficult to cram everything in each week, it's pretty expensive ($1700 per quarter - financial aid only pays for part of it), and it's hard to figure out what each assignment really is asking for. I only have 2 years left, but I'd like those 2 years to not be full of the same constant stress I've had for the last 2 years.

I have talked to reps from the University of Phoenix before, but their programs seem to be about the same.. I have requested information from a bunch of other colleges (let the calls begin flooding in :-P), but I was wondering what other people's experiences have been.

If possible, I'd like it to be a college that has a brick-and-mortar school along with their online programs, because the state I live in doesn't count online-only degrees as being worth anything, employment-wise.

It is true that there is a low standard of acceptance at UoP and yes, they are a private university (for profit) as is Harvard.

There are many grateful people who worked hard to get their degree in spite of a family of three to support on a single income from a third-shift, factory job. Today, having a degree, regardless of the program of study, opens more avenues in the workplace.

On the other hand, yes the banner ads that are plastered all over the web poised for the "clicking", are a bit unethical when they are attached to a sweepstakes contest. I have spoken to people who were promised a free snickers bar, and were enrolled in college instead.

An entire year at UoP AA programs is only $8,200.00 per year, so it is not insanely espensive and it is actually less than Belleview. The average university is $12,000 annually to attend.

My advice, if you are having difficulties fitting school into your life and have the discipline to READ, take advantage of this stepping stone. See it as an opportunity. With $360,000 students currently, our own NFL football stadium, and the #1 ranked spot in the country for all higher educational institutions...all those people cannot be wrong.

Ignorant statements such as,

"I honestly think that the school (even though I'm sure the actual curriculum is not), is viewed as a joke."

are subject to perception. Who's "view" are we talking about here? "Even though I'm sure" is such a vague assumption. There are bold claims without reference or personal experience. I hope you are in fact getting an "education" that teaches you how to think, because critical thinking is one of the second courses you take at UoP. With this business model doing so well, it is easy to see why other institutions will do everthing in their power to mimic it's success for their gain. Watch out! UoP is fully regionally accredited here in the U.S. is Belleview?

That's a great question.

The early enrollment scholarship can be combined with the Military and Hero Scholarships, but not the Transfer Scholarship.

All of the other scholarships are combinable.

We will also waive the application fee for students that complete the application and submit the necessary forms in a timely manner.

The Military Tuition discount is good through the completion of their degree program. Alot of military students that have Education Benefits remaining may actually make money while attending school.

The other Scholarships are paid out on a semester basis, for example; the Transfer Scholarship is paid out at $ 500.00 per Semester for four consecutive semesters.

I can't believe the prices! How can online tuition be $400/unit of credit?

I should pay $24000 for 60 credits, which is ten times what I paid for my son's 60 quality units at a community college? And an online school has very low overhead (heating fuel, etc). No? Please explain.

I am sincerely considering, but I can't sign onto something without having this explained.
