Non- Traditional Student

Hello my name is Carrie and i am 55yrs. old i have an Associate Degree and i am seeking futher education into my Bachelors Degree.

I will be majoring in Psychology/ Substance Abuse Counseling is the concentration point for my academic and career goal.

I do not have the Financial Aid i need to pursue a full academic education, however, i will not give up on trying to win a Scholarship to an online University some day.

When one window closes, a door opens instead...

Almost a month ago, I decided to take charge of my professional future and stick to a plan of nailing a position in my field. One of my friends told me that in this economy, how can I take a risk in these crazy times of joblessness? I told them that I felt good about taking charge and that I was going to go for it!

I was a Program Supervisor for a nonprofit agency, managing the home health aides that went into elderly homes that receive federal aid. In my same agency, there was a position posted for a Career Counselor, and I went for it. Not only did I go for it, but I got it!!

However, during this time, my existing program was being restructured, due to the economic times, there were talks of drawbacks in funds and my program was probably on the verge of being eliminated. Scared? Of course, I was! I had already started to plan and re-plan my Plan B. I got so frustrated, but I got word that I got the position as Career Counselor.

So, what am I trying to say here? Now, yes, the job market is not great or excellent for that matter, but there is hope if you believe in your abilities. There is a statistic out there that I read that it is more likely to get hired by networking and sending in resumes to corporations whose positions were unannounced. Doors are either cracked or wide open just for you to take advantage of. I can honestly say that my faith keeps me believing, if my Creator can keep my needs met, then I can do the impossible, only if I continue to strive for the things I desire.

During these trying times, especially while most of us are dipping into the world of school, this is a test of our beliefs and faith. We are testing it right now as we are taking online classes, because we BELIEVE that a better opportunity will come afterwards. Just keep that faith and watch your labor be rewarded. I dare you to keep the faith during your academic journey....

Hey there dandan,

Welcome to the site and hopefully you will find a slew of helpful resources available here. One thing that is good about life is that second chances does present itself. You have the opportunity to carry on a greater plan to better your future. I will have to agree with others, you really did not specify what your degree would be in? What or where does your professional passions lie? You have a GED and of course there is nothing wrong with that, and more universities have created sources to help manage time, study strategies, and other helpful tips to make your journey successful. Now working as much as you do can be an obstacle but not impossible, online studying is a commitment and you must devote your time, mind, and energy to your courses. Regionally accreditation is very very important. You want to go into a program that is FULLY accredited.

I commend you for your efforts and I hope that you chose the best university that will accomodate your vision and needs.

Saying 'Hello' to the online world, but with some concerns...

Hello everyone!

My name is Joshua, and I am sort of new to eLearners.com. I will first off by saying that I am currently attending an online university (Ashford University), and have been for nearly three years now. I will suggest for anyone looking for a degree to consider them, they are pretty reasonably priced. I am majoring in Social Sciences (concentration in Education) without going for the ‘teacher certificate program’. I have my reasons, and maybe able to keep up with posts on why not to do the program if anyone is interested.

I have concerns however. Maybe some seasoned online learners, as myself, that have tried different colleges please give me some input for the following concerns:

-I am looking for a Master’s degree program that is focused in Education or Instructional. I have overviewed Ashford (of course), AMU (American Military/American Public University), AIU (American Intercontinental University), UOP (University of Phoenix), GCU (Grand Canyon University), Regent University, Troy University, WGU (Western Governor’s University) and Walden University.

Long list huh? I know its long, but I feel that my BA that I am receiving from Ashford, or at least the field of study, is not adequate enough for my expectations in my near future. I know the education field is broad, but the major focus I want is something that is without a licensure program, due to my current status (active duty military) which I don’t have a lot of free time to do as such.

-I know that regionally accreditation is highly important, and I want a university that has great results. Tuition is kind of discounted for me, to a point, plus I have my MGIB to cover the rest. I want to know though has anyone taken the online degree program, graduated, and gone to a big name university, or a state university.

-I know that NCATE accreditation is important and WGU is so far the only online university that is accredited by it. I would like any input from anyone that has graduated from them, or is attending, and has their student-teaching in progress.

I appreciate the help everyone, I will be keeping post up and having important questions, that haven’t already been answered, if I can find any.

distance learning?

Hi, I was curious if anyone had any opinions on taking classes with NEF University. It’s a distance learning online university which has classes which directly correlate with the new job stimulus plan. I’m asking because its not part of the elearners site, but has an amazingly CHEAP deal, they award scholarships to the first million people to join and you end up paying just $25 for a bundle of classes. Thanks in advance to anyone with information on the topic!

BS in Web Development/Web Multimedia and Animation - Online College or Universities?

Hello, I am active duty military and get tuition assistance. I am trying to pursue an online degree in Web Multimedia and Animation or Website Development. In the near future I want to open a Website Designer Business to create websites mainly for christian organizations (churches, non-profit organizations, and outreach ministries) to help increase their ministries.

Does anybody have any advice as too which online college or online university is trustworthy and a good choice? Does anyone have any idea how do I get a Website Design License to be able to create websites legally?

I tried Kaplan Online University, but found a lot of recent crooked reports in www.ripoffreport.com. I saw over 20 different reports stating that Kaplan is ripping off people constantly. It is a good thing I did my research before I enrolled into the college.

Maybe you guys know some other colleges or universities that are honest and trustworthy. I want to make sure I use my Military Tuition Assistance wisely.

I graduated in 2002 and since then I worked for two years before having two beautiful daughters. Right now I am considering going back to work but these are hard times. I do not have time to enroll in a full time program or to a part time program either. So I was considering the e-learning idea.

I was wondering if anyone has experience with e-learning programs -- for instance the one I’ve been looking into is extremely affordable (about $25 for a package of classes) at a site called NEF University. For this price, the courses could look good on a old resume. The website of the place is www.nefuniversity.org – advice?! Is anyone else looking into online learning?
