It doesn't get any faster or cheaper than CLEP exams...and the military is a big supporter of CLEP exams. They push those things a lot.

There are CLEP exams which are worth six credit hours, so your best bet is to pick a subject that you are good at, spend a little time studying for the exam, and then spend the $80 and take the test. It doesn't get any better than $80 for six credit hours. A great study resource is www.instantcert.com It's 20 bucks a month, but it shouldn't take longer than a month to study for the exam. So, for a total of $100, you could have six credit hours and be well on your way to getting the job you want in the Air Force.

I was in the Navy and took the ASVAB test before enlisting. I don't remember my score, but apparently I did very well because the recruiter was practically salivating and trying to get me enlisted in the nuclear power program. But, my interest was in journalism and broadcasting, so I spent five years working as a Navy journalist. I had good times and bad in the military, but I wouldn't trade the experience for anything in the world.

Re: What would you consider a good number of CLEPs

I did almost a year's worth of credit through CLEP tests and I loved it! To pass a CLEP test (or similar test like DANTES/DSST, ECE, or TECEP), you either have to know the material already or else learn it ahead of time through independent study or some other means. Either way if you pass the test it demonstrates that you know the material, so I don't really see a different between that and taking a class to demonstrate the same thing. That's not to say I think they're right for everyone in every subject, but for those who can pass them, I don't see a reason not to do so.

-=Steve=-

Re: CLEP, DSST, and the Big Three

Also you can learn more about CLEP tests here:

http://www.elearners.com/resources/clep.asp

http://www.elearners.com/guide-to-online-education/distance-learning-best-kept-secret.asp

CLEP, DSST, and the Big Three

Dennis is totally right, CLEP and DSST exams can save you a lot of money. Just be sure that whichever school you're selecting will accept them (almost all do) and that the tests you're considering won't duplicate any transfer credit.

It's also true you may want to look at Thomas Edison State College, Excelsior College, and Charter Oak State College, especially if you may have a lot of transfer credit or were in the military. They're collectively called the "Big Three" or "assessment colleges", because they're the only three accredited schools that allow you to transfer 100% of the credit you need for a degree. They can be a great way to save money, but you'll have to chart out a more complex course when it comes to what credit you're going to earn. What you're supposed to do isn't clearly laid out for you like it is at most colleges.

-=Steve=-

Re: Hello, looking for some help.

im4unc:

Thank you all for your responses. I am searching and looking around, my
goal is to obtain a BA in either, IT, or History by end of Spring 08.
Thanks again. Any help is much appreciated. Ow also, by looking around, my process to get all this going would be to choose a school, submit my transcripts, select my degree, then proceed on with CLEP and DANTES? to finish out the degree?

Even at the few schools that allow you to complete a degree entirely through CLEP, DANTES, and other transfer credit, you won't be able to finish a Bachelor's that way. You have to have some upper-division credit in your major. In your case that would probably be easier to find online in IT than History. I expect even if your community college credit covers all your electives and general education requirements, and some of your major requirements, you'll still need to take at least five upper-division courses (as well as CLEP and/or DANTES tests) to finish up. Doing that by Spring '08 will be pretty challenging.

-=Steve=-

Re: Hello, looking for some help.

Ow also, by looking around, my process to get all this going would be to choose a school, submit my transcripts, select my degree, then proceed on with CLEP and DANTES? to finish out the degree?

Re: Hello, looking for some help.

im4unc:

Hello all, new to this online forum here, but not new to school. I am basically looking for an school that will accecpt my current college credits so I can obtain a B.A. that would hold up in obtaining a job. I am more than likely going in the military so as long as it will fly with them I am cool. I currently have over 75 credits, but they don't all go directly to one degree, I have several in electronics, and technology and the rest are general, math, science , english, history and such. Thanks for any help, Derek

Just curious, where did you pick up these credits? Did you take college courses, CLEP tests, etc.? Also, were the schools regionally or nationally accredited?

Re: Online Associates Degree in Business?

I'm in the same boat as you, and I've been slowly but surely knocking out the credits I need for a degree. Trust me, an associate degree is not enough these days. At a minimum, you need a bachelor degree. The bachelor degree today is like the high school degree was about 30 years ago...without one, it is very, very difficult to be considered for a decent job or a promotion of any kind.

A business degree is a good, general degree to have. It will qualify you to manage in nearly any line of work. You got some good advice here as far as taking CLEP exams and racking up some fast credit. The schools to consider are Thomas Edison State College, Excelsior and Charter Oak State College. All three are relatively affordable, and don't forget you can quality for student aid at any age, although Excelsior does not participate in any federal student loan programs. Western Governors University is also a good option and will let you advance through the program as quickly as you can work and pass their exams, or "competencies" as they call them.

Have you taken any corporate training or military training courses? If so, they might be worth some college credit, so don't overlook that, either. I'm currently studying with Penn Foster College, but I'll be applying to Charter Oak State College soon and plan to wrap up my BA very shortly afterwards. They seem to get high marks from many students for great customer service and they are very willing to answer your questions before you apply or enroll.

Don't wait any longer...get started today. You may even find yourself wanting to get a graduate degree later!
