bachelors...and then hoping to get accepted to a Master's program

I have applied to PSU in Portland,
OR for their online degree program and also
filed an online FAFSA.

I am in some very challenging times financially, unemployed
and not making much at self-employment. I will need financial aid to accomplish
completing school.

I talked briefly with the PSU financial aid office. My
understanding from them is I could be eligible for a PELL grant of about
$5800...and a max of $12, 500 in student loans. Due to late filing, I
understood there may not be any Pell money left for '09. and the $12, 500 in
loans would not be enough for tuition and help with living expenses.

Are there any other realistic opportunities for loans? Is
the cap using FAFSA a maximum of $12, 500. Is this the amount of both
subsidized and unsubsidized loans. Is there anyway I can increase this $12,500
amount higher?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

best regards,

The Wall Street Journal published an article on October 11th reporting that there is new legislation that forgives student loan debt for folks who work in careers focused on helping others (e.g. public health, law enforcement, and those who become a lawyer serving the public interest.

The White House has posted a special release discussing this legislation. It's called the College Cost Reduction and Access Act of 2007.

During the signing of the Act, the President addressed the audience: "The bill I sign today increases funding for Pell Grants by $11.4 billion over the next five years. It allows us to increase the maximum award from $4,310 -- to $5,400 by 2012."

"How students borrow for college could soon change"

"When Loretta Medeiros' financial aid letter from New York University arrived last summer, she remembers seeing just one lender mentioned: Citibank.
Assuming it was the only lender NYU worked with, Medeiros borrowed nearly $29,000 in a private loan for graduate school. But this year, when she needed $3,000 more, she decided to ask NYU if other lenders were available. The university directed her to a school website, where she says she found a lower-cost option that will save her money.

"I was kind of going in blind" in seeking loans, says Medeiros, 23. "I wish I'd known there were other options, instead of (the school) throwing a main bank in my face."

Concerns that such students are paying too much for loans because of questionable ties between lenders and universities are reaching a boiling point. With New York State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo set to testify before a House panel today about his probe of the student-loan business, the industry could be on the verge of transformational change."

Read more at: http://www.usatoday.com/money/industries/banking/2007-04-24-student-loan-future-usat_N.htm

[Don't want to be saddled with student loan debt until the end of time?
