I travel frequently as part of my job. My goal is to complete my BS to ensure I have the paper necessary for future promotions. However, I am equally interested in completing a Masters a few years down the road. I am currently 30 years old. Have Lots of military education through the Air Force (currently out of the military) and 21 credits earned through a community college.

- It is important to me that I have the ability to complete my Master's a few years down the line.

- Receive as much credit as possible for CLEP or equivalent testing options

- Able to complete my degree sooner, rather than later (Accelerated or otherwise - I am not afraid of hard work)

- Be affordable (I have a limited budget - However payment plans etc may open up the possibilities some. I would also qualify for GI Bill if accepted, but the modest amount paid probably won't cover 100% of any program)

- Last the degree come from a generally respected institution...it doesn't need to be Harvard. Just respectable.

I've narrowed it down, but have difficulties deciding and was hoping you might have some thoughts. Any suggestions outside of these are welcome!

Columbia Southern University - Conflicted because only has National Accreditation (Everything else seems to fit the bill)

TROY University - Seems more expensive and perhaps slower with only 30 Semester Hours accepted via CLEPs or examinations

Baker College Online - Seems reasonable, concerned about pace. Plus it appears I would first have to enter the Associates program and complete an Associates

Fort Hays State University - Max 30 Semester Hours accepted by examination, VERY inexpensive at $161 an hour, Accelerated Offered

American Military University - $250 per credit hour for undergraduate-level courses and $275 for graduate-level courses, Accelerated, Regional & National Accreditation, Up to 90 credit hours transferred and/or earned from examination...not sure of max from examination allowed though

Have you heard or know anything about any of these? Any other you might recommend?!?

Re: Ashford University MAOM program.

ASHFORD IS LIKE BEATING YOUR HEAD AGAINST A CEMENT WALL I've been trying for over a month to get some questions answered - like how many of my credits will they accept, the Clep and Berlitz process. They just push hard for me to sign up, get financial aid and "we'll work it all out later." For Gods sake I"m not asking the meaning of life, but rather basic questions that all prospective students should ask. With Ashford I can't get straight answers to my questions. The advisors say they will call me and do not (3 times so far). I sent two emails stating that because my work schedule is difficult perhaps it would be best to answer my questions via email. They respond that they will call me and include no answer in their email response. When I ask why they didn't call as they stated they ask why I didn't call them! Final straw -apparently my advisor enrolled me in classes!!! The financial aid people do call, repeatedly, because I wouldn't sign that Master Promissory Note, thereby giving them permission to charge me, until I got my questions answered..

I'm going to Columbia Southern University. On my first phone call my questions were answered and I received my transfer evaluation report in 7 days. Heck they were even friendly! My employer is paying $8000 a year for my education, but I need certain paperwork to get reimbursed. If Ashford can't return my calls when I'm not even a student how can I trust them to get me the paperwork that my employer requires?

Re: BSIT at Columbia Southern University

Columbia Southern University does have a reasonable reputation. This is in part due to its connections to several regionally-accredited universities (University of West Alabama, University of North Alabama, University of West Florida).

It is, however, not regionally accredited. It is accredited nationally by the Distance Education and Training Council, a recognized accreditor. However, there are companies and universities that will not accept that accreditation as equivalent to regional accreditation.

My take is that:

a. You would find little difference between the two types of accreditation; but

b. You should make sure that a nationally-accredited school will meet your current and future needs.

Tom Nixon

http://www.bestonlinehighschools.com

Opinions Required on the MS Occupational Safety & Health - Columbia Southern University

I am hoping that someone out there has some first hand experience that they can share with me about their experience with the MS Occupational Safety & Health program offered by Columbia Southern University. Specifically:

1) Is this program heavily focused on United States regulations, and therefore of limited utility to students outside of the United States (I'm Canadian).

2) Was the course content and degree of use in your career?

3) Are there similar on-line programs that I should be considering?

4) What's the difference between an M.Sc. and an M.S.? Is it merely a naming convention?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Columbia Southern University

Hi Jeff:

CSU is well regarded. I knew a grad from there who worked for a Police Department (I forget which one), and is now teaching CJ at a college. The CSU degree also helped him gain advancement at the Po po. :) All kidding aside, research and make sure you know what NA and RA is first, and then you could make an educated decision. My degrees have worked great for me. I have an RA AA, a NA B.S., and I am currently working on my MBA/NA. I also have extensive coursework from the University of Iowa, UCLA, and UCI. Let's just say my transcripts are about 4 inches thick!

In the end, a degree is merely a piece of paper. Success actually depends on you.

Good luck!

Abner

Jeff281:

Abner,

What are your feelings about Columbia Southern University? What do you hope to accomplish once you have your master's degree?

One quick note about Columbia Southern. CSU is a completely virtual institution - it has no physical classrooms or campuses! People often throw around the term "online university" but there are, in actuality, only a handful of truly online schools. Some others include:
