The program is designed around the American Psychological Association (APA) Guidelines for the Undergraduate Psychology Major. I am considering Capella Universities online M.S. in Psychology with an emphasis in Counseling Psychology (http://www.capella.edu/schools_programs/psychology/masters/counseling_psychology.aspx?ct=1&). Attending a traditional program that meets 2-3x/week on campus that is not near me is out of the question (I live in Temecula, CA). I have religious responsibilities that often fall on different nights of the week, so night school is also hard to manage. I DO NOT want school/work to interfere with my being the best possible father for my little girl.

I had always been weary of for-profit schools, especially ones that are online. However, as I grow older and my family becomes more important, I see that maybe they are for me. It seems that many people in forums are very critical of these schools, however, they really don't offer any reasonable arguments with explanations. They shout generalities which makes me think that they are biased. I also am researching whether the program would fulfill the bbs.ca.gov requirements for internship as an MFT. The two people whom I have spoken to in person about Capella (which they were/had attended) only had good things to say about the school.

Some rumors I have heard:

Do Capella's enrollment counselors receive commission for enrolling students? I heard that doing so is illegal?

Do instructors get paid based upon the amount of students that are in and remain in their classes?

Will the coursework be challenging? I want to challenge myself.

Instructors are often absent from the online classes?

Thanks in advance for your non-biased, informed, and caring input,

Jake M

oceanfirehawk@gmail.com

AIM: jakey3eb

Skype: jakedm84

Good BS IT degree program?

Hello, all!

I'm currently attending Capella University for my BS in Computer Science, but I'm less than impressed with their setup. It's extremely difficult to cram everything in each week, it's pretty expensive ($1700 per quarter - financial aid only pays for part of it), and it's hard to figure out what each assignment really is asking for. I only have 2 years left, but I'd like those 2 years to not be full of the same constant stress I've had for the last 2 years.

I have talked to reps from the University of Phoenix before, but their programs seem to be about the same.. I have requested information from a bunch of other colleges (let the calls begin flooding in :-P), but I was wondering what other people's experiences have been.

If possible, I'd like it to be a college that has a brick-and-mortar school along with their online programs, because the state I live in doesn't count online-only degrees as being worth anything, employment-wise.

Thanks much for the help!

Ph.D programs

These distance learning universities all offer Ph.Ds.

Can anyone rank them in descending order of total students registered (Total student body population in Ph.D programs) in any type of Ph.D program.

I assume University of Phoenix is number one. Given the difficulty of this phase, one often wishes they had previewed what was to come.

Many Ph.D candidates seem to hit a brick wall and feel disarmed when called upon to work on the methods and results section of their dissertation.

This is the point where many students diligently search for help calling on their advisor, peers, university assistance and even Google.

This is also the time when the student asks themselves the question" HOW MUCH HELP IS TOO MUCH".
Surely no one will deny that having your dissertation written for you is very wrong.

On the other hand, it is not unusual for doctoral students to get help on specific aspects of their dissertation.(e.g. APA formating and editing) It also is not unusual for advisors to encourage students to seek outside help.

If you are a distance learning student it is almost essential you seek outside assistance for the methods and results section of your dissertation. The very nature of distance learning suggest the need for not only outside help but help from someone gifted in explaining highly technical concepts in understandible language by telephone and e-mail.

Distance learning, and the avaiability of programs, has increased exponetially over the last few years with some of the most respected institutions (Columbia University, Engineering; Boston University and others) offering a Ph.D in a variety of fields. If you are enrolled in a distance learning program, or considering one, you will be interested in reviewing the reference sites listed at the bottom of this page.

As stated above, many students hit their dissertation "brick wall" when they encounter the statistics section. Frequently, a student will struggle for months with that section before they seek a consultant to help them. This often leads to additional tuition costs and missed graduation dates.

If I were to name a single reason why a PhD candidate gets off track in their program it is the statistics and their fear of statistics.

So, the question is whether or not it is ethical to get help at all. If so, how much help is too much.

I don't know if there has ever been a survey of dissertation committee members who were asked this question, however, I know many advisors take the following position when they suggest or approve outside help:

To a large extent the process is self controlling. If the student relies too much on a consultant, the product may look good, however, the student will be unable to defend his/her dissertation.

It takes a committed effort on the part of the student and the consultant (resulting in a collaborative/teaching exchange) to have the student responsible for the data and thoroughly understand the statistics. The day the student walks in front of the committee to defend, there should be no question as to his/her understanding of statistics.

When their defense is successful, the question of "was the help too much" is answered.

If you are a Ph.D candidate and would like additional information, you may email me at:

Boyd

boyd67@comcast.net

Reference sites:

http://www.usdla.org/

http://www.cgsnet.org/

http://www.statisticallysignificantconsulting.com/

SANS Technology Institute

So I am looking at going into STI's master of Information Security Engineering program--but I cant seem to find alot of reviews of this program online--the master's program is relativily new (but not the sans certification program that it is based off of, been running since 1998 or something like that)--Any ideas on how I can find some more objective information on STI in comparison to other places like Capella?

Thanks!

Anapologetos

there site is sans.edu

Web Development Programs?

Hi everyone,

I'm looking at starting an online degree program early next year. I already hold a BS in Human Ecology (minor in Business) from the University of Tennessee, however I've been doing some freelance/volunteer work in web design since college, and I've found that it's what I really enjoy. I would love to make it a full-time career. I'd like to get a BS in IT with a specialization in Web Development and Design. So far I've seriously looked at WGU and Capella, and both of their programs look impressive. However I've heard negatives on both schools... like that WGU is really more for people who are already accomplished in their respective fields, and that Capella is overpriced for what you get (and doesn't have a very good reputation anyway).

Would any of you have suggestions for other schools that might work better or have well-balanced programs? Online learning is my only option at this point, as I work full-time and tend to have a crazy schedule. I'm definitely not wanting to "buy" a degree... I want to LEARN and be well-prepared for my new field upon graduation. Both Capella and WGU have been emailing/calling me daily since I applied... but I won't be making a definite decision until I've looked at all the alternatives.

Any help would be appreciated... thanks for your time! :)

quarter hours

Hello All,

Can you please explain to me the difference between quarter hours and credit hours? My ultimate goal is to work in the field of Developmental Psychology. I had applied at UoP but they told me their BS in Psychology hasn't been ironed out so to speak and I'd have to start with my associates in Business, then by the time I'm done with that, the program I want to be in should be rolled out. That doesn't really sit well with me. I'm now thinking about Ashford University. They seem to be fairly priced, the program has a few classes in development, and I like the accelerated format. I'd like to get your opinions. I'm looking to getting my masters at Capella. Not sure about my PhD yet but I do know I want to go that far with my education. Any tips/suggestions helping me lay out my path would be very helpful.
