Miatech: I keep vacillating between UIS and Regis (FSU is too expensive). I've
leaning now more toward UIS. I sent an e-mail recently to one of their
admissions counselors requesting more information on admission to the
program. I'll post the information when I receive it.
Do you have college ...

A month ago, I sent an e-mail to one of the admissions counselors at the University of Illinois at Springfield inquiring about their online BSCS program. I'm still waiting for a reply. It seems that she could have at least acknowledged my e-mail by now. Should I try one of the other counselors, or send a message to the ...

I'm looking for an online BSCS program also, but American Sentinel isn't on my list because it isn't regionally accredited. This may or may not be a problem for a potential employer. It's definitely a problem if you want to transfer credits to a regionally accredited college. Personally, I wouldn't invest that ...

Mrayo84: MartyS:If you want a true
BSCS entirely online from a regionally accredited college, your choices
are Regis University, Florida State University, the University of
Illinois at Springfield, Mercy College, Franklin University, and Ellis
University. Baker College offers a BCS. The Ellis degree requires a
concentration in ...

Cajun:I wonder why they discontinued the program?
I don't know. I read somewhere recently that there has been an upsurge in undergrad CS admissions, and I know that U of Illinois is still filling their classes.
I really expected that there would be more online programs now than there were a year ago. Now I'm starting ...

$325/hr is high for an Associate degree. Have you checked your local community college (or any others in your state)? You may be able to take some online classes there for far less. I'm paying about $53/hr.

It doesn't look like Eastern Oregon offers the BSCS online. Also, I decided to revisit Chico State's program, and was greeted with this notice:
Unfortunately, admissions
to the Chico Online Computer Science MS and BS Degree programs have
been suspended. Unless you have already
applied and been accepted into the program, you ...

SteveFoerster: MartyS:The Baker program is a BCS. I think it would difficult to be admitted
to an MSCS program with this degree. I believe the BCS is designed as
a terminal program, much as the MCS is. The math core is substantially
weaker than most CS programs - I think that this is one of the major
advantages of the BSCS; ...

Thanks for the replies, everyone. I suppose that I should be happy
to have the opportunity to get a degree online, since that's my only
realistic hope of getting a degree at all. But comparing the programs
available at the few colleges that offer online BSCS degrees to a lot
of strictly B&M programs, the differences are ...

A little over a year ago, I began searching for colleges that offered a BS in Computer Science degree entirely online. I found six (Florida State, U of Illinois, Chico State, Regis U, Franklin U, and Mercy College). I've tentatively decided on either U of Illinois or Regis, but I'm not entirely happy with either of them for a number ...

Hi Kathy,
I don't know whether U of P or AIU require you to obtain permission to take other classes while enrolled, but some colleges do. However, my opinion is that it might be better not to work on two Bachelor's degrees simultaneously.
Have you considered getting a degree in Software Engineering or something similar and taking ...

Thanks for your input, jzr and jaydog1212. When I talked to the enrollment counselor, she told me that all of the courses were available online every semester... that sounded great at the time, but perhaps I should have seen that as a red flag, indicating that they are willing to allow a less qualified instructor to administer an online ...

Sorry to hear you're having problems... I'm seriously considering Regis for a CS degree also.
Other colleges I've found that offer a BSCS entirely online are Florida State, University of Illinois, Ellis College, and CSU Chico. I don't know what delivery format they use, but maybe one of these would work better for ...

ConstantLearner:Hi Marty,
I took a couple of online classes with Regis a few years ago. I was very pleased with their format. It was very disciplined and the instructors were very responsive. We communicated through emails and chat in their online portal. This worked for me because it felt like I was in a classroom environment. I had assignments ...

A few months ago, I mentioned here that Regis University was on the short list of colleges that I was considering for a Computer Science degree. On January 31, I called Regis and spoke with Kendra, an enrollment counselor. When I asked about transferability of credits from my community college, she offered to have an unofficial ...

I think I've pretty much decided on Regis University for a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science. Has anybody here taken online classes at Regis? What did you think of the university and the lesson format? The only real reservation I have at this point is the 8-week format... I'm accustomed to the traditional 16-week ...

CaptainKangaroo:Holy COW!!!! If you program anything like you research, you are AWESOME!
Forgive me for not being certain on this item, but how do all of these programs rate as far as getting certifications? If HenryW is lurking out there...he may be able to speak to it more. My understanding has always been that certifications ...

SteveFoerster:Speaking as someone who hires IT people, I think you may be placing a lot more weight on the word "applied" than is warranted, both for Troy and NAU. If the courses cover the skills that you want to develop, then that's going to be okay in the IT job market, which is much more meritocratic than ...

helenh:Wow! You're done ALOT of research - bravo!
Thanks, but I think the real work is just beginning... I'm going to
have to contact a few of these schools and try to figure out what
courses I can transfer to minimize the courses I have to take at the
much more expensive senior institution.
helenh:Quick question ... have you ...
-
SteveFoerster:Oooooooh. Yes, it is! Do those four courses that are prerequisites cover C and C++? If so that's a pretty sensible progression, and I'd be surprised if they wouldn't transfer. But I'd get as much information as possible and ask Illinois, especially if they're otherwise your ...

It occurred to me that I was not sufficiently clear on the Java
requirement at UI. As a condition of admission, you must have already
completed 2 semesters of Java, and submit a sample of your code from a
college or work project. At my community college, I have to take 4
prerequisite Computer Science courses before I can take the ...

Steve, thanks for the reply.
SteveFoerster:
Sounds good, and I don't think I'd be as quick to assume Florida State is less rigorous than other schools.
You're probably right
about that. I guess I should look at them again, but I don't think
I can afford 60 hours there, so I'd have to ...

I've been
reading this forum for a few months and researching online colleges.
