i am on disability for schizophrenia will it be hard for me to get a health information technology job ?

I am disabled with the clinical diagnosis of schizophrenia.  My symptoms are well under control and I had an aspiration to go to DE college and get a associates degree in health information technology so i could get a job as a medical coder.  I am wondering if my having been disabled for 13 years is going to hurt me badly trying to seek employment.  I really dont want to get a degree if no one would hire me after i got out of school

    thank you very much

I used to write resumes for graduating students, and I can say that when you have a long gap in your employment history, sure, you'll probably have to explain it.  And yes, if you do so honestly I'd be surprised if you didn't run into prejudice about your condition.  If I were in your situation I'd be up front about it, and maybe counter some of the seriousness with light humor, although not excessively self-deprecating.

Then again, I've never had to deal with this.  Has anyone here?  What they have to say would be of a lot more value than what I think.

thank you.  would love to hear from other people.  i spend alot of time doing geeky things on the computer so i could explain my employment lapse with constructive things i have done that aren't related even though its not a job.  i am very worried though about how difficult it will be once i get my degree.  i hope someone will give me a shot.

    Hi,

I work in human services and have worked with clients who have various mental health diagnosis'. I feel that alot of them whether they choose to work, go to school or are involved in other activities are able to function throughout the day. I realize this may not work for everyone, but it seems as though you are dedicated to getting a degree and living the best life possible, which I think is very commendable. I think you should get a degree because it is a goal you have for yourself in life and not based soley on whether or not employers will hire you. I know this is important and of course you would want to gain employment once you had a degree, but would you regret not getting one if you decided against it?I think that perhaps getting a degree and graduating will show employers that you are able to function and that you will be a good employee. This is just my theory, hope this helps.
