    Hmm [^o)] What to do?

Hello my name is Angie.  I am considering going back to school and I was wondering if I should get a bachelors degree in accounting or MBA-Accounting or MS-Accounting.  I have a degree in business but my major was marketing (big mistake on my part!).  I am now deciding to go back to school and pursue my degree in accounting.  I really do need an online college but after reading a few post, Cajun thank you very much for the info regarding sitting for the CPA exam in Texas, I do not know if that will be possible.  I do not have the time to go to a brick and mortar.  I work full time and I have a 1 and 2 year old.  I have been looking at a few online colleges but since I will have to complete 30 hours at an institution I am wondering what online college should I begin my courses and then transfer to one of my local universities here in the d/fw metroplex.

I would certainly appreciate any suggestions!

BTW.......eLearners has been very helpful glad I just happened to stumble across the site!

    Hi Angie, and welcome!

What are your career goals here?  Why do you want to switch from marketing to accounting?  Is it that you specifically want to do accounting, or is it more that you perceive that it's easier to find well paying jobs in accounting than marketing?  The more you let us know the better!

Just out of curiosity, why was the marketing program a mistake for you?

    Re: What to do?

Hi Steve, thanks for replying.  Well, to make a long story short I really should have gone the extra mile and completed accounting because that was my first choice.  I was in a hurry to get a degree because I felt like I had procrastinated long enough (10 years).  I chose marketing because it was very interesting to me and I was intrigued by everything that I was learning.  Looking at it now it was not the best choice for me and I have not been able to find a job in that field.  I worked full time while I was in school and I was not able to do an internship which I absolutely recommend everyone to do because if you don't it will be that much harder to find a job out there.

I have a few more options with accounting and I can work my way up which will be a good thing for me.  I don't mind that!  My goal is to start at the bottom in accounting learn while I work and go to school.  I want to work at home as well (let's say 7-9 years down the line) doing individual and small business income tax returns.

The income potential is greater, I feel, than in marketing.  Marketing is great income potential as well but in my experience just getting in the front door was a major hurdle.  I'm sure there are those that will have a different experience.  I certainly don't want to discourage the marketing students I am just relaying my experienc.  I think doing an internship is the key!

    Re: What to do?

Hey there, well I've got good news and bad news.  First, the prereq requirements in Texas are to have 30 credit hours of upper division accounting credit to sit for the test.  The good news is that LSU has a certificate program in accounting that is not only very inexpensive but gets you half way there, at your own pace.  No classroom work required http://www.is.lsu.edu/ACCTCertificateProg.asp?nid=103&Level=CO&Online=1

Now as for the other 15 credit hours, they do have to be classroom.  But I think some of the community colleges, Tarrant County for example may have a classroom offerings on weekends or evenings.  I know that isn't online but it is possible (I did a part time 30 credit hour certificate program in classroom, wasn't fun but it was doable).

And your BS degree will certainly help as a 4 year degree is required.
