    Penn Foster High School Course

I have been homeschooling my son for a few years now, and he does have a few learning disabilities when it comes to language arts (due to his ADHD) so I've got some worries when it comes to signing him up for the Penn Foster High School Program. My husband and I have discussed it and he seems to be for it, but I'm really worried that my son is just not ready for this. I know that there are some of you that have kids who are taking advantage of the PFHS so I'd really appreciate your feedback.

    Thanks,

    Hi Cat,

I'm curious, how old is your son, and what does he think about this?  (I take my twelve year old son's commentary with a grain of salt, sure, but that doesn't mean I totally discount it!)

Also, are there resources online for parents of homeschooled ADHD kids?  Are there any curricula that have been specially designed for kids like your son?

Re: Penn Foster High School Course

Speaking from my own experience, I have adult ADD and online learning or independent learning is the only way that is really effective for me.  Sitting in a classroom for someone like me is almost impossible and I only learned what I did learn that way by either reading books during class in bursts or just sheer force of will to pay attention (which didn't always work).

Have you consulted your doctor about his learning disability and the extent to which an independent study method may be a viable approach to learning?  The great thing about this methodology is that he learns his way at his pace.

Re: Penn Foster High School Course

Tanner is 14 years old and we've been homeschooling for years now, but I'm finding that this year it's harder for me to find resources that will help him. Many sites require paid memberships for upper level education and if I'm going to pay for something I'm thinking I might as well pay for the entire thing through PF. I realize this is something he can do at his own pace, but it's the reading and comprehension part that is difficult for him and that's pretty much what PF is all about. Lots of study guides and books.

Excuse me as I go scream in frustration now.

Re: Penn Foster High School Course

    Hi Cat,

I am a PF High School student and an International adult learner.( non native English speaker), wiho almost completed the program (18.5 credits at present)

The program requires  21.5 units of credit for graduation.( each credit is equivalent to aprox.120h. of course work)

There are 16.5 core subjects to complete and 5 elective credits.

In my opinion most core subjects are easy to comprehend and all course material is written very clear and understandable, so with your guidience and expierence in homeschooling it might work very well.

With part-time studies you can finish the program easily within 2.5 to 3 years.

If you have any question about the program, subjects, etc.. just let me know
