Trying not to get overwhelmed...but want to begin a PhD program soon!
There are so many options out there, yet my main concern is finding a well-respected online university. If I am going to pay as much as a doctoral program demands, I want it to be top notch. I am interested in industrial/organizational development...leading to a consulting career. Any suggestions? Fielding looks reputable, but expensive. Which online universities are well-respected in this field???

I've looked at Capella and was wanting something a bit more personal. Have you heard anything about the University of the Rockies? They are very interested in me attending, but I haven't hear one thing, good or bad, about them. I want to enjoy this program, and want the best. Just don't want to be taken advantage of, you know?

I also think University of Phoenix has a PhD in I/O. However, I understand it requires a few residences each year.

If you want a recognizable brand name at the doctoral level, I would say that Fielding is the best regarded school in this area that you can do at a distance. Although, you may also want to look at the Saybrook Graduate School, which just this year is starting a PhD program in Organizational Systems that may suit you. They're also well regarded.

I've spoken with Saybrook and it looks like their program has been in existence since 2000. The price is steep, though. Would you recommend a PhD program for $80k? Theirs does sound interesting. Thanks. Becky

Depends on the type of return on investment you are expecting and what you define as a "return". Also it depends on what you want to do with the PhD.

I didn't realize they were that much. No, I wouldn't. And I speak from personal experience. I really like the University of Pennsylvania's Executive EdD in Higher Education Management. It would have been ideal for me. I liked the format, and Penn is an Ivy League school ranked 7th in that field. But the price tag was $110,000. There's no way that would be worth four and a half times as much to me as the program I eventually chose.

I agree. But eighty grand is a mortgage. It would be extremely difficult to get a decent return on that investment. -=Steve=-

The University of Pennsylvania has online degrees? What other online degrees do they have?

Not exactly. The program that interested me was this one. It required one weekend per month in Philadelphia, with online work in between. I don't know whether any of their other programs are available by distance, even in part. -=Steve=-

Well, i'm not sure if you want to proceed an online PhD. First of all, PhD is very labor intensive and requires a lot of time and effort in order to be successful. So, i've heard most students who are pursuing such degree are full time student. I know University of Texas at Austin has one of the top psychology programs in the nation. You should definitely check it out.

I know what you mean, and personally I'd rather be doing my doctorate full time. But when the choice is part time or not doing it at all, well, part time it is. -=Steve=-
