valicvader:I am a 37yo male and have been thinking of getting an online degree. I worked in IT for over 10 years and was laid off from my job about 3 years ago. Since then, I have been working as a CSR. I'm not happy with my current position and need to change. I do have an Associates degree that I got back in 1993. It has basicially done nothing for me. I want to get my Bachelors.
The good news is that one important thing that your Associate's degree will do for you is cut the time it takes to get your Bachelor's degree in half.
I feel that I am too old to go back to school and if I put forth the time and money, will it pay off?
As a 35 year old, I emphatically reject the idea that 37 is too old to do anything! Besides, there was a woman who recently finished her Bachelor's degree in her 90's. If she can do it, you have about sixty more years before you can cite age as a reason not to go to school!
I also don't have any money to pay for it, so I would need financial aid. If I go back to school, I was thinking of Human Resource Management or possibly something in the Medical field.
Most people need student loans, so I wouldn't be too worried about that. However, It's a good idea to keep the money you borrow to a minimum, since you'll eventually have to pay it back. HR Management and Healthcare are very different fields. What's attracting you to them? Are you definitively no longer interested in IT?
Is it worth it for me to go back to school or should I just throw this idea away?
If you do nothing, nothing will change. You're currently unhappy, so it seems to be that doing nothing would be pretty crazy!
