    WGU featured in TIME Magazine

WGU Featured in TIME Magazine Article, “Go Western, Young Man,” 11/24/08.

Be sure to read this wonderful article about WGU in TIME. It says that WGU is the "best relatively cheap university you've never heard of".

I'm not sure I agree it's the best lesser known inexpensive school, especially since we don't get many people here who have chosen them, but it certainly seems like a choice many people should consider, and beyond that, this is a very nice feather in their cap.

Good publicity for WGU, but why are these articles always written by somebody who seems like they have never heard of distance learning before?

'Did you know you can take classes online?  On your COMPUTER!  Wow!"

I also wouldn't call WGU the best lesser-known inexpensive school.  I might have to throw that honor toward Peru State College.

Time magazine = written for the masses.  I don't believe most Americans out there really know much if anything about online education.

I understand what you're saying, but I disagree.  I think most people have by now at least heard of distance learning, even if they aren't exactly sure how it works.  With all of the UoP TV commercials and the millions of "earn your degree onlin" ads that are prevalent online and in magazines, I would say most people have heard of DL.

Oh sure, most people have heard of DL and many probably even have an opinion on it, ill informed or not.  What I'm saying  is that most people know very little about DL.  Kind of like flat taxes vs. the system we have now.  Most people have heard of it, few understand or it'd already be policy.  But there I go getting political.  :)

UofP generally does not get good word of mouth endorsements.  I work with some UofP grads and even where I work more people slam them than not.  When I finished my MBA online I had to argue against a couple of people spouting off that it's "easier" to get a degree online.  Even though most people are familiar with the concept, how it works, how well it is accepted and how to go about it are usually still up in the air.

I agree that there are still many misconceptions about DL, which is why I wish Time and other publications would spend more time addressing these misconceptions, rather than acting like DL is such a novelty.

Re: WGU featured in TIME Magazine

I agree that it would be more useful for even mass market publications to focus on correcting misconceptions about distance learning rather than still be marveling at its very existence in 2008.  There are so many misconceptions that there would be a lot of ground to cover.  For example, many people think of Phoenix as an "online" school when it has more students in classrooms than online.

True, however Time probably hasn't the space available in one magazine to address all the misconceptions out there.
