Early in its history, there was a time when WGU looked like it WAS headed for failure. Enrollment was low as the school tried to figure out how to convince people they actually could get a worthwhile degree via distance learning from some place called Western Governors University. Grants from private industries and foundations saw them through the lean times. To their credit, they have managed to expand their program offerings and enrollment.
I take their press release to mean that they currently have 10,000 students enrolled. While that sounds like a lot, it really isn't when compared to some of the other DL schools like UoP or Penn Foster College, which both have hundreds of thousands of students. I remember a time when WGU had only a couple of hundred students enrolled, and critics were questioning the school's viability.
