One reason would be if people are studying through one of The Big Three and trying to meet their degree requirements. While those schools do accept CLEP/DANTES credit, you can't always test out of everything, and many times you can find cheaper courses elsewhere.

I've done it, twice in fact. I don't recommend it either. For me it was overwhelming the first time but I gutted it out. The second time was just as bad.

I guess in theory you could take as many courses from as many colleges at the same time as you could handle. I have been taking individual courses from different colleges for about a year now. I am not working on a degree, but I cannot imagine why you could not be working on two degree programs at the same time- as long as you could keep up with the work load.

Sure you can. I was enrolled in two different colleges at the same time last semester. Due to the workload, I don't necessarily advise it.

I supposed you could earn two degrees from two different schools concurrently, although the credits from one degree progam may not transfer to the other and be used for both degree programs. Why do you want ot earn two different degrees at the same time?
