If you are looking to pursue a career in social work, you will need to get specific certifications or licenses to become a practicing social worker. I'm not sure if your Behavioral Sciences degree will specifically address those things. Be sure to check that out.

You should also consider earning a master's degree in social work [aka the MSW]. You will be shut out of many positions (especially government positions) if you do not get your Master's degree. Talk with the career counselors at your school, or find any local/national organizations for social workers for more advice.

I am working towards my BS/Behavior Sciences with a focus in psychology. What is the best way to get experience in the field while I study? Any thoughts?

Hmmm ... Social work is very broad ... so I think the answer would depend on which area you are interested in, such as:

Substance Misuse and Addictions
Aging
Child Welfare
Public Welfare
School Social Work
Justice/Corrections
Developmental Disabilities
Employment/Occupational Social Work
Health Care
Mental Health/Clinical Social Work
Community Organization

I think there are alot of volunteering opportunities available in many of these fields probably within your local community. Have you talked to your program director about how to gain experience as a student?
