Self taught Associates degree in liberal arts.

I have an idea for a self taught liberal arts degree and would like to see if there are other people who would be interested in doing an initial run to see if it is possible.

The degree would not mean much to an employer and of course would not be accredited in any way but it would provide anyone interested in a better understanding of basic liberal arts curriculum. Is anyone interested?

I think initially we would need 5 - 10 people. The curriculum is available free online but the problem with doing it by yourself is that there is no way to discuss what you are learning and of course no way to quantify what your learning.

Not everyone is merely interested in education as a means to an end. They may be interested in simply learning more about subjects like literature or arts history and discussing these things with other like minded learners. Does this appeal to anyone else? It would cost nothing more than time...like anyone has any of that these days LOL.

Email me and lets talk about it. It may not be possible but I think that it may be a great way to imporve ones self without spending a lot of money to do so!

Online degree or certificate program for a citizen living abroad?

Hi everyone.

I am an American citizen currently living in Chile. We will be living here for at least another 4 years and in that time I would like to complete an online degree or certificate program in Information Technology with an American institution. However, upon searching, I have found that most schools require that you reside in the US. I am not currently working but will when I return to the US and want to continue studying to have something extra when I return to the work force.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to proceed?

I would suggest a forum that allows students to write about their experience with distance learning, talk about individual schools, programs, etc...

Also, I would suggest a forum where people can post web links/sites related to e-learning.

I'll think of more and post them later.

Only if that would be cool with everyone since some people are shakey with the idea of chatrooms. But I think it'd be helpful for everyone, instead of waiting a day or a few days for an answer What do you all think?

Online Learning versus online University Employment Recruitment

Happy New Year to All!

I'm just a bit disappointed with most online universities, and traditional universities that offer online degrees. I'm disappointed with the fact that most online universities are not doing much to hire online learners.

What would I like to see? I would like see online universities develop job titles that are specifically related to the online environment. For example, a job title such as Admissions Coordinator can easily be change to online Admissions Coordinator by developing some sort of intranet capability that will allow the online Admissions Coordinator to submit information to the university. Most online learners never attend a physical campus so why can online universities employment recruitment reflect such.

I think one of the problems is the lack of technological training, and strategic planning. I spoke with couple of University Administrators in the past, and their biggest problem was developing an online division. For one, they had no prior teaching experience and had no clue how to properly run the online division. So, what they did was to include the online division under the same budget as campus. In my opinion, that is where this problem of not recruiting online learners stems from. Think about it, online learners are spending the same amount as campus students and sometimes even more due to technology fees etc. Campus students on the other hand, have career services, internships, and online learners have nothing but we are paying the same amount for the same degree as campus students. Does that make sense?

I'm fully aware that online learning is geared towards the "working adults"; however, that image of "working adults" is changing because a lot people are starting to tune in to the flexibility of online learning.

What should online universities do? In my opinion, online universities should include in their strategic plans recruitment tactics for online learners. Do you agree?

...doesn't anyone offer an online MA/PhD in Philosophy? I would settle for an MA. Really, given the subject matter, Philosophy would be a great candidate for a distance-based learning program. Lots of reading, discussions via forums/chats/etc... sigh. I don't have the time to go to a physical campus. Life is too demanding. I really wish that more universities would offer programs I'm interested in.

This is a great forum but I would like to see forum where you can find out how to do things on the forum like, for example, how do I create that little text box within a reply with an excerpt from the post you are responding to. I couldn't find it in the FAQ or help section. I did find out by just clicking on buttons to see what they do. I found out that it is done with the quote button. I think it is a good idea to have a location with general forum information such as who the moderators are, how to contact a moderator/administrator, etc. Some of this information is under other forums but I foget where it was when I need it.

You guys do a great job. Keep up the good work.

A Few Suggestions

First, I'd like to point out that this site, elearners, is just brimming with information. Sometimes people come to the discussion forums asking questions and it's clear that they haven't even tried looking on the elearners site for the information they are seeking. Often times it's just sitting their waiting crying out , "Read Me!" Take some time and flip through the site so at least you know what there and what isn't. Those few minutes could save you days while you wait (and hope) for someone to answer your question.

Second, I'd like to share a small secret with everyone. It's about a thing known as Google. If you go to google.com you can pump in a query and get an immediate answer. If you take a few minutes to read the instructions you can become quite proficient at this and you'll find that there are very few questions that you can't answer on your own. Personally, I have a very different reaction to these two types of questions: a) "I've done some reseach and found three schools (x, y, z) that offer a degree program that interests me. Does anyone know of any others? b) "Can someone tell me where I can earn a degree in abc?" We all like helping but it's easier if it seems that you've at least tried to do some of your own homework. (especially if the answer is right on the elearners website).

If you take suggestion #2 you will eventually learn that there are many websites out there that can help you. Here are a few:

Pleasepleaseplease learn at least a little bit about accreditation. Do not fall for any degree mill schemes. "How do I know if it's a degree mill?" Start here:

Next, if you're going to ask a question, ask a GOOD question. People post questions such as, "What can you tell me about the University of Montana?" My wiseguy answer, "It's located in the state of Montana." I've correctly answered the question but I'll bet it's not what the questioner wanted. Try to be specific about what you want to know. Someone asks, "Can you identify a school where I can earn a Bachelors degree in IT?" Then, when someone identifies a school that meets the criteria the original questioner says, "No, that's too expensive." Well, they never mentioned money in their original question and so they have wasted my time. If you do that too many times you'll find people very reluctant to bother with your questions.

Finally, don't ask for advice and then argue with the people who are just trying to help you. Bad form. Be polite and be friendly. Ask questions. Listen to everyone and then make your decisions. What works for someone else may not work for you. Don't take any wooden nickels. Don't eat a large meal immediately before entering a jumprope competition. Wait until full twilight to spray bees nests. Don't run the yellow light. Floss as often as you can. Call your mother. Wash your hands often. Don't talk to strangers (unles they're really cute, or maybe just kinda cute) but definitely don't accept rides from strangers even if they're really cute.
