I'm not sure what your previous workplace experience was, but I live and work in Virginia, where there are many Liberty and Regent grads, and those schools are well regarded here for being educationally rigorous. In fact, even though Jerry Falwell is not my cup of tea, I still considered Liberty's doctoral program in education because of their reasonable tuition and reputation for academic quality.

Christian schools, which is what Liberty and Regent are, aren't exactly rare in the workplace. Although it would be illegal for an employer to discriminate against an applicant based on their possible faith as indicative of their school of choice, it does happen I'm sure, as people are at times discriminated against because of their sex, nationality, race, etc. Let's put it like this, if I were discriminated against because of my faith by an employer you can be sure that this is NOT the type of employer I would want to work for, certainly not one that would likely have any sort of longetivity to the job as I'm sure there will be other organizational cultural issues I'd have conflicts with. Remember, an interview is as much about you feeling out a company as it is they feeling you out, you are not obligated to accept every and any job offered to you.

Secondly if you are not a Christian and this type of school conflicts with your personal beliefs, then perhaps thsi is not the best school for you. There are other fish in the sea...

Personally I always appreciated the way Southwestern College was Christian, and supported those of use who were Christians at their school but without excluding others who may not believe the way we did. That being said I am certain U of C Berkeley, Columbia or the U of Chicago would not have shown Christians in their schools nearly as much respect as Southwestern did to non-Christians. But that's a whole different issue, the point is you may be surprised by how welcoming these types of schools can be.

Another point, Baylor is unashamedly, almost ackwardly Christian and yet their graduates are well received pretty much universally in Texas and the south at least.

If you don't think that these schools are a good personal match for your needs and desires, then keep looking, don't force a square peg into a round hole.

Hi Cajun,

I understand your point, however the website of many of these more religious schools, like Liberty, tend to shift some of their styles of teaching toward a religious end. For instance, I was so ready to attend Regent until I learned they focus their teaching skills in a more Christian bias way. I do not have a problem going to any type of religious type of school, but I am concerned with the perception upon which is it exacted upon and to the extent upon which an individual is considered based on their chosen school.

Furthermore, the costs associated with higher education, especially considering the time consumption in the endeavor, is considerable to say the least - three or four years!

Then I look at Liberty and find this:

Both of these schools sell themselves on a religious foundation, both of which I think count negatively if the employer does not accept religious types of universities or perhaps biases their opinion of performance based on where one has attended a university.

Having been discriminated against in the workplace by my religion, I am looking for a doctoral school that is a hybrid or all online. However, I do not think religious schools are the answer - although I would not be here posting if I was not intrigued by other opinions to help formulate a possible new outlook for myself.

None whatsoever. Not only is that illegal (religious discrimination) but many of the worlds most prestigious schools are either currently or were religious schools.

Notre Dame - Catholic and founded as a religious school

Harvard - Named after a preacher "John Harvard"

Duke University - Founded as Methodist

SMU - Southern Methodist University

Baylor, Rice, the list goes on.

Isn't this a religious school? I understand that religious schools are not accepted in some companies because of how students' are taught. Any truth to this?

I am currently attending Liberty University for my Bachelors in Accounting, and I couldnt be more satisfied. I am attending online, and the support, tuition, and plans are GREAT! I also looked into Kaplan, and they are extremley more expensive!

Both are great choices, however Liberty is likely to be a lot less expensive.

I work in higher education in Virginia, and Liberty has a good reputation especially for doing distance learning well. That said, I don't remember hearing anything bad about Kaplan either. If your expenses on this are covered by Uncle Sam, then between those two school I don't think you can make a bad choice.

I am currently approved for Voc Rehab through the VA and am seeking a BS in Information Technology, the top schools on my list at this time are Liberty and Kaplan. Any suggestions or feedback would be appreciated.
