    Miskatonic University

Are there any Miskatonic University Alumni or current students here? I have always wanted to go to that university.

    Re: Miskatonic University

Can't say that I'm an alumni, or know anyone who has attended.  As for wanting to attend, seems that it might not be the best thing for one's life expectancy, no?  Leading to a career in the unusual, unexpected and paranormal.

I'm guessing most posters won't get your reference.  And I have to admit, I don't get it from the source material.  References and the occasional literary nod to a master.

Why would you ask about a fictitious university on a distance learning forum?

A diploma mill would be the only thing more evil. Big Smile

For those who don't get the joke, "Miskatonic University" is from the works of early 20th century horror writer H.P. Lovecraft, whose stories often involved such things as hideous insanity-inducing alien monsters.

    Paranormal Studies Degree

I want YOUR opinion, tell me how much you love it, hate it, or don't care about it.  If you believe it's the worst/best idea ever, please post.   Hateful remarks can be PM'd.

Here is my course recommendations for an Applied Associate of Science degree in Paranormal Studies.
Do you think or BELIEVE it should be a AA or AS degree instead of an AAS degree??

Honestly, I got some of this from Flamel College (an Unaccredited college) and modelled it from Southwestern Illinois College and American Military University.

    Work-Experience Internship**** (6 units)

    Re: Miskatonic University

And for what profession is this credential preparing you? I would normally think of an AAS as being vocational in nature, so ...

I have to say, this is definitely one of the most ... errr ... unique posts I've ever seen here. And I've been here since day one.

    Re: Miskatonic University

OK, I'll play along.  This type of degree would not fly because you are proposing an applied science degree for an area of study which has no basis in science.  UFOs, Cryptozoology and EVP have either been discredited, or no solid evidence has been produced to prove that UFO's, Bigfoot or ghostly voices on tape recordings actually exist or are real.  You would have a hard time finding a college which would offer this type of degree program.  Some universities do conduct research into these areas, although they do not offer an official degree program, as far as I know.

Penn State does have the Paranormal Research Society, although it's not an actual degree program.  I think the closest thing there is to a parapsychology degree in the U.S. is John F. Kennedy University's MA in Consciousness and Transformative Studies.  There is also the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology, You could also enroll in a program in psychology, biology, engineering, anthropology, zoology, etc. and conduct research into these areas.

If you're open to studying in the UK, you could enroll in Coventry University's MS in Parapsychology.

    Re: Miskatonic University

I think if you really take these subjects seriously that the last thing you'd want to do is lump them all together.  Were I interested in cryptozoology, I'd study biology, zoology, and geography, since the idea is that these are unusual animals that are sufficiently remote, etc., that we simply haven't yet properly documented them.  Similarly, were I interested in UFOs I'd study cosmology, astronomy, and engineering.  To study everything esoteric all at once is to surround yourself with unnecessary controversy, making things easier for those who would dismiss your work without considering it.

That said, there are distance programs in these sorts of subjects.  Atlantic University, which is accredited by DETC, has an MA in Transpersonal Studies and is starting an MFA in Visionary Art and Consciousness later this year.

That would make it a Paranormal General Studies degree.  Certificate or concentrations could be altered by adjusting the core courses, and some adjustments to the general education for UFO studies (engineering, Cosmology, Astronomy, avionics), Hauntings and Ghosts Investigations (Religion, sociology, psychology, Investigations).

In that case, it becomes a department!!   The Paranormal Studies Department.  More to come.

This thread makes me miss the X-Files... The first few seasons were so engaging, and I loved the characters Mulder and Scully.

I never saw the movie, though...

You should, since they're in pre-production for the sequel.  Well, sort of, anyway -- the first movie was about the alien conspiracy, but this one evidently won't be about that at all.
