"Regional and state unemployment rates were generally little changed in August. Overall, 21 states and the District of Columbia recorded over-the- month unemployment rate decreases, 18 states registered increases, and 11 states had no changes, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported today. Over the year, jobless rates declined in 27 states and the District of Columbia, increased in 21 states, and were unchanged in 2 states."

"The national unemployment rate remained at 4.6 percent in August."

Commissioner's Statement on the Employment Situation

From the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Friday, October 5^th

"In September, health care employment continued to grow, rising by 33,000. The food services industry also continued to add jobs, with a gain of 25,000 over the month. Together, these two industries have accounted for about one- half of all nonfarm employment growth in 2007. Over the month, employment rose by 37,000 in professional and technical services; notable job gains occurred in management consulting and in accounting services. Social assistance employment increased by 12,000."
