I need to take this particular course to improve my performance, add greater value to my organization, and ultimately advance my career.

On a personal note, Aspen is probably one of the NA schools I have the most respect for.  They are an industry leader anyways in the distance ed MBA.

Yes, I agree. I am currently an MBA student at Aspen. I have been a member of various DL forums for years now, and Aspen has always been highly regarded.

    Take care,

    Re: Aspen University

    Hi Raj,

So far, Aspen has been great. Emails are answered also immediately, and the delivery methods of instruction are well designed. Assignments are easily turned in via email. I honestly have nothing bad to say about Aspen. If you view my student profile on this forums "Student profile" section, you will see my background, and I also mention Aspen. This profile does not cover all of the schools I have attended for the sake of brevity. Let's just say I have attended many. I have a degree from a Brick and mortar College, and I have taken several Distance learning courses from UCLA, UCI, U of Nebraska, and the University of Iowa. This statement is going to cause some controversy, but I will say it. Distance learning is distance learning, not matter how you slice it. The modes of delivery in distances courses are basically the same. Some may have you fax papers, some may have you email, some may be interactive, etc. In the end, the onus is on you to take the individual initiative and complete the work. This is a solitary endeavor, however, a very rewarding one.. I love distance learning because I don't have to deal with parking and scheduling issues.

The price for Aspen is great for an accredited degree. There is a yearly $100.00 library fee. There are 3 or 4 study guides at the MBA that run between $75.00 to $100.00 each. That is about it. Many schools charges these fees, and many more. Bear in mind that if you are referred by a student like myself or Horsey, you can save $250.00, so that reduces some of the cost as well. All in all a damn good deal!

You are welcome to private message me anytime.

    Good luck, Abner

    Re: Aspen University

I see that this is actually a certificate program, for which the standards aren't very high. A certificate program from Harvard is really no more meaningful than a certificate program from the local high school. My point being that you really can't go wrong with certificate programs. They aren't degrees, but they can certainly boost a resume somewhat. I wouldn't worry about accreditation when it comes to degrees. I don't think a certificate from a regionally accredited college can be transferred anyway. The classes for a certificate are not part of the colleges regular curriculum. They are set off separate and can only be used for the certificate.

What's up with comparing colleges to high schools?

You definitely need to make sure that the college that you are getting your degree from is properly accredited.  I'm hoping this was a typo or that I misunderstood the sentence! Smile

Their accreditation is from the Distance Education and Training Council www.detc.org , an accreditor recognized by both the United States Department of Education www.ed.gov and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation www.chea.org . It's legit.

Jerim is wrong again....Italics are Jerim's words

I see that this is actually a certificate program, for which the standards aren't very high.

This is an opinion to which you are entitled, whether you support it or as in this case, do not.

A certificate program from Harvard is really no more meaningful than a certificate program from the local high school.

You couldn't be more wrong if you tried.  A graduate certificate from Harvard will give the earner enough grad credits to teach that subject in college to undergrads.  It's in excess of the usual 18 hour requirement that many schools maintain.

Additionally Harvard looks good on any resume, regardless of the credential, more so than most in fact.  Universities like the University of Notre Dame and Tulane University are making quite a bit of money on their professional certificate programs based upon their name alone as the certificate is actually administered by a 3rd party vendor.  There would be no market for this if there were no demand, there would be no demand if there were no results.

My point being that you really can't go wrong with certificate programs.

Actually you can.  A certificate from an unaccredited school can hurt you professionally.

They aren't degrees, but they can certainly boost a resume somewhat.

The first thing you've said that I agree with.

I wouldn't worry about accreditation when it comes to degrees.

    What!?!?!?

I don't think a certificate from a regionally accredited college can be transferred anyway.

Again, you couldn't be more wrong.  Perhaps you should start reading my blog?  Anyways, the certificates can be sorted into professional and academic.  Academic certificates are usually actual college courses that degree seeking students take but the certificate is much more condensed and focused than the respective degree.  I took an undergraduate certificate from my local community college and transferred 23 hours towards my BS.

A professional certificate often carries CEUs which many times can be applied to a degree but on a much smaller level.

The classes for a certificate are not part of the colleges regular curriculum.

Not true.  The courses I took at my community college were exactly the same as the degree seeking students who were in fact sitting right next to me.  I was generally the only certificate seeker in my class.  Harvard also uses the exact same courses for their grad certificate programs only the seeker forgoes the research block of learning at the end, which is about 1/3 of the degree.  Thus a certificate from Harvard at the grad level are exactly the same classes.  Northcentral University has a CAG that is in fact 6 full blown grad courses to receive the certificate.

They are set off separate and can only be used for the certificate.

Generally this is only true when trying to earn a certificate from said college instead of a degree.  However some, like Peru State will award a certificate as you earn a degree.  So again, not true.

    Re: Aspen University

    Hi every one,

I spoke with Beth(an admission counselor at AU) yesterday. I asked her about RA and she said AU is in process to obtain accreditation from regional accreditation agency, and it is a long process. I did not have chance to ask her when they could get the RA. Do you know any information about that? The DETC accreditation seems not being treated as the RA in some other universities. Perhaps, this is the only thing that is currently holding me back to sign up for AU’s MSIT program.

    Thanks in advance.

    Re: Aspen University

Not that I'm disputing the info you received from an admissions counselor, but if Aspen University is seeking regional accreditation it is certainly news to me.  I haven't heard anything about this.

    Re: Aspen University

News to me as well.  I personally wouldn't hesitate on Aspen's program if the price was right, the curiculum fit my desires and the degree got me to where I want to be, such as working in IT.  DETC accreditation seems to be sufficient for most employment purposes that I have run into, especially in IT because of so few qualified candidates for certain technical levels and skills.  If you are looking at the MSIT program, do you mind me asking what you intend on doing with that degree?

You also have to look at the cost vs. benefits of the degree.  Back when Aspen was $4,500 for an MS degree the cost vs. benefit of the degree was fairly obviously in high favor on the side of benefit.  If however they jump to $250 a credit hour, then you have many other possibly better alternatives.
