Carldeb:Now that you mentioned CLEP, I was wondering if most colleges accept CLEP for upper division classes (junior, senior year, 300 and 400 levels courses, what ever you want to call them.)?
No, CLEP is exclusively a lower-division phenomenon. However, There is a similar program called DSST a few of the tests for which are considered upper division, and there are also Excelsior College Exams many of which are upper division. However, most schools only recognize CLEP.
Carldeb:Are all colleges the same in regard to what level they accept? When I look at the clep courses being offered in my area (I assume they are the same ones being offered in all areas of the country), they seem to be lower level, general education courses. I am aware that most colleges require you take the major's core and required courses, but can you clep out of upper division elective credits in the major? Cajun, this is in particular to Southwestern, well at all colleges really. I never really understood how Clep works.
Colleges differ on what they accept. However, many schools accept the recommendations of the American Council of Education, which has evaluated CLEP exams.
