    Online computer security/forensics degree

Does anyone have any suggestions as to where I can begin to search for programs with a computer security/forensics degree?

Because cost is a factor, associates into bachelors programs are fine. Any other suggestion you may have would also be appreciated.

    Thanks!

From a quick Google search I found...

    http://www.aiuonline.edu/online-computer-forensics-degree/

     http://www.champlain.edu/majors/digitalforensics/

Or an option I have seen many professionals take is to get a BS in IT or IT/Networking or IT/Information Security and then a certificate in digital forensics as this tends to be a specialized trade.  What exactly are you trying to do with the degree?

My inquiry is for my child who is completing 9th grade.  She is interested in working with computers, but that is a very broad field.

Back in March she attended a technology day at a local B & M college.  One of the topics was in computer security.  She said she might be interested in doing that.

We're looking into online learning as a possible way she can get her college degree.  I always thought she'd go to one of the local colleges/trade schools here, but since we've discovered online learning that has opened up a lot more possibilities.

Like I said, cost is a factor.  We've also thought about what you've suggested--going for an undergrad degree in IT, then do a certificate.  I wasn't sure which way might help her get a job.

    Thanks!

If you major in forensics I personally believe you will be in a niche market however if you simply major in IT or IS or networking, etc. then certify or get a certificate of completion, if you later change your mind about your career there will still be plenty of non law enforcement/security jobs out there.  The broader the stroke the more ground covered.  It's best not to get too specialized in a major.

I think you have a valid point.

I was discussing this with my child and thought that perhaps she should go ahead and do a broader field then specialize as she moves into her upper level college courses.  That way, she has time to explore what she'd really like to do.

I was also looking at the cost of doing the complete degree program online, and I think we're going to look at doing an associates through a community college (which also has a lot of virtual learning) or going with one of the other online programs which would be more cost effective.

Thanks so much for your input!

An AS or AA in general ed would be a great idea as it would likely transfer right into any BS of your choosing.  That away she has a couple of years before commiting to any one major.

If your child is really this motivated, consider finding out whether your school district has dual enrollment for when she gets to 11th grade.  Many places have it where a kid can do part of eleventh and twelfth grades at the local community college and walk away with both a high school diploma and an Associate's degree useful for covering general education credits.

Alternatively, consider CLEP, which is just about as good at many four year schools.
