    Re: University of Phoenix alternatives

    wynhall19:

Hello- new here-noticed the mostly-negative feedback about U of Phoenix.  I'm an older student transferring over from a community college, to earn a BS in Elementary Education. If U of P is overpriced for the product they offer,  could anyone suggest a really good online school ?  With a degree that  wont leave me at the bottom of the pile when i go for a teaching job?  ... U of P counselor is calling every day and I must make a decision. thanks so much for your input

I think the marketing is the negative for UoP. I have been attending there now for most of this year and can tell you that it is a good school. If price is a concern then you may want to shop around however because they are expensive, but they also throw in much for resources and it is somewhat accelerated.

The negative feedback that they get many times has more to do with students who jump in and are not ready to commit themselves and then when they see it isn't "easy" they trash the school. Of course, you can search and find similar negative feedback on almost any online program. I have not found one yet that I could not see the holes in the argument and while I am not a fan of the marketing this is going to happen especially to UoP because they are the largest online program out there.

Just find what suits your needs and go for it. Good Luck!

I think there are some  very good  distance learning programs in US and UK. However, in my opinion would be better to choose this kind of program degree while working, considering it as a plus not you main and first  and probably most important educational background. Plus, I will choose a program from a  REAL university that offer distance learning program.

I am european and worked in US  for several years and quite honeslty I have never seen in big firms hiring someone who has graduated from UoP.

No offense Luca, but you haven't looked too hard or for too long.  I'm not a UofP fan, but I know of several UofP grads who have done well for themselves, including at some large firms.

Mary Peters, the current Secretary of Transportation and 12th in the line of presidential succession, did her Bachelor's in management at the University of Phoenix.

Just another example of how things depend on the person and how they choose to use the degree.

Well the Secretary of transportation is appointed  and is not required to have any degree or any professional qualification at all. Beside that i'm sure some people may have find a job with UoP but good and serious education is another story made it online or not.

I 'm just saying UoP i s not a good school, but even form poor quality school graduate good and skilled students. It depends how you the tools at your disposal and some good luck too. I still belive a good online program from a good university exist in the education arena.

Sorry Luca, your typos, syntax of speech and such are making it kind of difficult to understand your point.  Confused

Not that I'm trying to discredit you or anything, but maybe you'd like to qualify your opinion.  Wink

Frankly, if a grad getting appointed to a Cabinet position isn't enough to persuade you that a school's degrees are useful for finding employment, I think that says more about your biases than it does about the school.  The University of Phoenix is the largest university in the U.S., with both regional accreditation and additional professional accreditation for its business programs.  It may not be Harvard, but it doesn't have to be for it to be a real school.

Another explanation: the person gets appointed despite his/her degrees. Charles Abell, the principal Deputy Undersecretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness, received two Presidential appointments while claiming a master's degree from the very fake Columbus University. One must conclude that this reflects poorly on him--and his sponsors--not that it reflects well on the oft-moved Columbus diploma mill. Not Harvard, not even a real school.

I agree that degree mills on one's resume are a timebomb that might lie dormant, unnoticed for some time, and that just because it doesn't go off at some particular time doesn't mean the degree mill is legitimate.

The issue, though, was whether having a degree on one's resume from a real school like Phoenix is some kind of career killer, and the answer is clearly no.
