Do you have a backup plan?

What backup plans do your have if you can't find a job? How long do you think is reasonable to search for a degree-related position before jumping on the first job you can get?

I've been told that you should expect to take up to a month per $10K worth of salary you either made or are seeking to make as a benchmark towards job searching.  In other words 6 months to find a $60K a year job and so on.  Of course that's not official or anything but it sounds about reasonable.

Re: Do you have a backup plan?

With our current job market situation, yes everyone should have some sort of backup plan. As far as looking for a job, it's all about how you sell yourself out there. Knowing the right people will be the way to get you in 'some' door. It might not be your dream job, but hey, you have a job...

Re: Do you have a backup plan?

I am going to get a Masters degree thatn leads to alternate certification.  Employment is mandated as a condition of this particular certification.  If I cannot secure a job I have to change schools and go for traditional certification and hope I can land a job after I complete that program.  I feel as though it is ALL riding on finding the job!!!!

    backup plan: substitute teaching

    Hi,

Not everyone wants  a career as a teacher, but as far as a temporary backup, please consider substitute teaching.  Requirements differ by state and school system, but where I live you start at the local board of education and they will lead you through the approval process.  In my state you only need two years of college (no education courses, no specific courses in a major), a fingerprint check, and some letters of reference.  It's not for everyone, it's not big bucks, and it's not as easy as you think subbing, but it is a backup plan.

Substitute teaching is an interesting suggestion.  I've heard that with the recession those spots are hard to find, but if it sounds interesting to someone it's worth investigating.
