    Self Designed Ph.D.

The author of a text I read years ago had developed his own Ph.D. program in the philosophy of ideas. Are there any eLearning schools that allow a self created degree? I am interested in the creating a Ph.D. in the philosophy of persona achievement.

When you say develop your own PhD program, what do you mean?  They're all self-designed in the sense that you're the one coming up with your dissertation topic.  Having leeway in what coursework to do is also common.

Would what you have in mind be a better fit for a Philosophy department or a Psychology department?

    Re: Self Designed Ph.D.

Union Institute and University offers fairly self-designed PhDs. Not quite as self-designed as they once were, but still a little more freedom than most. However, it is certainly no easier just because it is self-designed and, to my way of thinking, might actually be more difficult.

I would consider Steve's thought, though. Sometimes it is better in terms of employment to have the degree in a recognized field.

Personal Achievement all right, but will the Ph.D be of that salient part of our egoistic well being or in it?
