My Penn Foster College Experience

This is Terry's account of how he got started at Penn Foster College, as well as his ongoing studies towards his online Marketing degree. Read about the various pitfalls of balancing homework with family, as well as his two jobs, personal life, and volunteer work.

Semester Two

I checked my online student portal on the Penn Foster College web site today and was surprised and pleased to see that the courses for my second semester have been posted, and the study guide and textbook for my next course have already been shipped!

Semester Two of the Marketing program is heavy on accounting courses.  I have five courses coming up this next semester, for a total of 15 credit hours.  Here is what I have ahead of me this semester:

Financial Accounting

Economics I

Managerial Accounting

Introduction to Literature

Introduction to Computers

Financial Accounting includes lessons on The Accounting Model, Accounting for Assets, Accounting for Liabilities and Owners’ Equity and Additional Topics in Financial Reporting.  Although there are only four lessons in this course, I noticed the text book is more than 600 pages long, with plenty of accounting problems throughout.  I have to admit, this doesn’t sound like the most exciting course.  In fact, I’m looking forward to getting to the Introduction to Literature course, and poetry is not my strong point.

The other courses also have four lessons each, with the exception of Economics I, which is the longest course, with eight lessons.  Since I want to at least start Semester Four by the end of December, I need to spend no more than four months each on Semesters Two and Three.  That means I need to complete each course in Semester Two in just over three weeks.  So far, it has taken me an average of 8 weeks to finish each course, studying about two hours per night.  Obviously, I will need to spend a lot more time hitting the books.  This could be an instance in which being in a self-paced course will be to my advantage.

Can I do it?  I guess we’ll find out!

From my experience I can tell you that the 8 lessons in economics 1 is far less work, and takes much less time, than the accounting four lessons.
