My Penn Foster College Experience

This is Terry's account of how he got started at Penn Foster College, as well as his ongoing studies towards his online Marketing degree. Read about the various pitfalls of balancing homework with family, as well as his two jobs, personal life, and volunteer work.

Hitting the Books Again

I’ve had a three week break from Penn Foster College because I have had to wait to take my two re-take exams for Business Orientation and Principles of Management.  I paid the $25 fee for the makeup exams, and I waited.

And waited.

It took nearly three weeks for my check to get cashed by Penn Foster College, and at the end of this last week I received a call from my proctor that he has my makeup exams.  Oh no.  I have been busy packing boxes and moving into a new home, and I have had absolutely NO time to study at all.

I must take and return my exams with 90 days of the date I took my original exams.  By my calculations, that will be the middle of February.  So, I have to call my proctor on Tuesday, and schedule the re-take exam for sometime within the next two weeks (to allow time for mail, which apparently moves pretty slowly to Scranton, PA).

That should give me a couple of weeks to study for the re-take exam.  I plan to use a different tactic with these exams.  The last time I took the exams, I ran out of time.  I estimate I’ll have about an hour and a half to take the two exams…half an hour for Business Orientation and an hour for Principles of Management.  I’m going to take copious amounts of notes as I go through my text, to make it easier to locate the information I think will appear on the exams.

The re-take exams will have different questions, of course.  But, at least I have a general idea of what is on the exam, and the type of questions I’ll have.  There are no multiple answer questions on these exams.  All of the questions require short essays.  It doesn’t help that my penmanship is horrendous, and I write slowly.  It’s too bad I can’t type all of the answers to the exam.  I type about 90 words a minute, so I would be done with the exams in no time.

I’m assuming it will take another two to three weeks after the exams to get my grades, so I’m looking at starting the next semester sometime by the end of February.  This will make it that much more difficult to accomplish my goal of finishing two semesters and starting the fourth by the end of this year.  I guess I’ll have to work faster.
