My Penn Foster College Experience

This is Terry's account of how he got started at Penn Foster College, as well as his ongoing studies towards his online Marketing degree. Read about the various pitfalls of balancing homework with family, as well as his two jobs, personal life, and volunteer work.

All I Want To Do Is Take My Exams!

I turned in my final assignment for my Semester One courses at Penn Foster College at the end of September.  I sent in my proctor form, and was notified  that my proctor has been accepted by the school.  However, here it is, November 5th, and I am STILL waiting to take my exams.

My proctor has not contacted me, and I can only assume he has not yet received my final exams.  I am going to contact him tomorrow to confirm this.  I also had a surprise waiting for me in the mail today:  a letter from Penn Foster College requesting ANOTHER $75 to extend my semester by another six months.  Huh?  I thought I was out of extensions for the semester.  I don’t need more time to finish the semester.  I just want to take the exams for the semester I finished back in September.  I guess another phone call to Penn Foster College is in order.

I knew I had to turn in my final assignment before the end of September to make it by the end-of-extended-semester deadline.  However, I did turn in my assignments on time.  Is PFC trying to tell me that the semester exams had to be completed by that date also?  I certainly don’t need another six months just to take my semester final exams, so why would I pay another $75 for another extension, which I have been told I can’t get anyway?

According to PFC, a student has six years to finish an associate degree progam, or 18 months per semester.  I have already worked on this semester for two years, although my plan is to finish the remaining semesters in less than six months each.

Had I not had to wait a month or more to receive my grades for my essays in English Composition, perhaps I could have finished the semester in less time.  I just want to take my final exams.  I have already paid for the first semester, plus two extensions.  I have paid the examination fee.  I have finished the course work for the first semester.  Now I have to pay another $75 just to take the final exams?

I will be calling PFC student services tomorrow.  This just doesn’t seem right.

Sometimes universities can get so bogged down with administrative details. I remember ALWAYS having to meet with financial aid officers to iron out all the details of my loans and student aid.

tcord, please don't be so nervous and overwhelmed by so much confusions here. all of your concerns I've already discussed with the college. At the time I've waited for the essay grades, having a bit of breathing time because they ask not to submit the next essay before receiving the grade, I called the college and asked them how come they let me wait and it goes on my time of the semester, the answer was that they going to give an extension if necessary because of the time waited for the grade.

Perhaps the mistake accord because the college's computer system shows that you're over another six months and prints out a letter without confirming the situation.

for the other concern, why does it take so long to get a reply at this stage, we really have to contact the college. I'm still waiting for the approval of my proctor and hopefully you'll make the exam-receiving time quicker. Best regards.

I am a little concerned.  I just signed up with Penn.  Have I made a mistake?
