My Penn Foster College Experience

This is Terry's account of how he got started at Penn Foster College, as well as his ongoing studies towards his online Marketing degree. Read about the various pitfalls of balancing homework with family, as well as his two jobs, personal life, and volunteer work.

A Race Against Time

In order to finish my first semester at Penn Foster College I had to pay $75 for a six month extension so I could complete my Principles of Marketing and English Composition courses.  Unfortunately, my six months are up on October 2nd, and I have one last essay to finish for English Composition.  As a result, I find myself in a race against time.

According to the Penn Foster College student handbook, I don’t have any more extensions available to me.  I have already purchased two.  Also, if I don’t complete English Composition by October 2nd, my semester is officially over and I will only be able to take final exams for the courses I have completed up to this point.  In short, I MUST submit my final essay by next weekend, or the time I have spend on the English Composition course will have been a complete waste of time.

There are two things I can’t stand to waste:  time and money.  I don’t consider my time with Penn Foster College to be a waste of either, but the prospect of not being able to finish the course by the time my semester expires is something I don’t even want to think about.

Fortunately, I should be able to finish my required reading today.  After that, it’s time to start writing the essay.  I really should have been done a couple of weeks ago, but business trips and family obligations have slowed my progress somewhat.

I still have not received my grade for my Reflective Writing essay.  I submitted that a couple of weeks ago, so I should be receiving this grade within the next week.  At least, that is my hope.  It took more than a month for me to receive a grade for my previous essay.  That is something else that has really made this course drag.  If I have any criticism of my studies at Penn Foster College, it’s the length of time it takes to receive a grade on the essay assignments.

Everything else is on hold for this week.  I must write and complete my Persuasive Writing essay by next Saturday.  If I don’t submit it before the end of the next weekend, I will have officially wasted time and money on this course.  For me, that is just not an option.

tcord, i am in the same boat you are this next two weeks.  i just received a letter about my first extension, but i don't have the extra funds to pay for it.  after calling them today, they said i have until oct 13th to take my final exam, so i am rushing to finish.  it has taken me over a year to complete the certificate program because i have a full time job and 3 kids, you would think they would cut you a little slack for it, but i guess not.  anyway, i wish you good luck.
