My Penn Foster College Experience

This is Terry's account of how he got started at Penn Foster College, as well as his ongoing studies towards his online Marketing degree. Read about the various pitfalls of balancing homework with family, as well as his two jobs, personal life, and volunteer work.

Persuasive Writing Essay

As I mentioned in a previous post, I am now working on my final assignment for the English Composition course…the Persuasive Writing essay.  This essay doubles as my final exam for English Composition, so I definitely have to get this one right.

I’ve been working on the reading assignments for this lesson for the past week.  This lesson is a bit more reading intensive than the previous essay assignments.  I haven’t done this much reading since the beginning of the course.

All of the text books are utilized in this lesson, including “Write to Learn”, “Hodge’s Harbrace Handbook” and several essays in “The Familiar Essay”.  The whole first week has been spent just reading in preparation for writing this essay.

I hope to be done writing the essay this week, and then I turn it in for a grade.  It hasn’t quite been a week since I submitted my Reflective Writing essay.  I’m not sure if I have to wait to receive my grade in the Reflective Writing essay before I take my final exams or not, but I’ll have to start studying immediately after I turn in the Persuasive Writing essay.  I had hoped to study for finals and write my final essay at the same time, but between work and things I have going on at home, I just don’t think I’ll have the time to do it.

The Persuasive Writing essay consists of developing a thesis statement…an opinion which can have opposing viewpoints, and then writing a 900 to 1,500 word essay to support your claims or ideas.  I’m actually pretty good at arguing (according to my wife), so this should be an easier assignment for me than the previous essays.  At least, that is my hope.

I’m still deciding between continuing with Penn Foster College or transferring to another school to just wrap up my bachelor degree sooner rather than later.  I am actually leaning toward continuing with Penn Foster College, even though it will take me longer to get my BA.  There are some courses coming up in the next three semesters that I would really like to take.  I guess it all depend on how well I do with my final exams.
