My Penn Foster College Experience

This is Terry's account of how he got started at Penn Foster, as well as his ongoing studies towards his online Marketing degree. Read about the various pitfalls of balancing homework with family, as well as his two jobs, personal life, and volunteer work.

Penn Foster College Update

Since I’m nearing the end of my semester, I thought I would just give an overview of my progress through the AS in Marketing program so far.

To date, I have completed 14 credits worth of courses in the first semester of the program.  This courses include Business Orientation (1 credit), Information Literacy (1 credit), Introduction to Business (3 credits), Mathematics for Business and Finance (3 credits), Principles of Management (3 credits) and Principles of Marketing (3 credits).

I’m still working on English Composition, worth another 3 credits, which will bring my Semester One total to 17 credits when all is said and done.  However, I am STILL waiting for a grade for my Narrative Writing essay.  Yes, it has officially been more than one month since I submitted this essay.

I was waiting for my grade to make sure I wasn’t off track for my next assignment, the Reflective Writing essay, but if it’s going to take a month or more to receive my grades, I’m going to just go ahead and complete the next two essay writing assignments.  At this rate, my six month extension I was granted at the end of April will expire soon, and the semester will end before I can take my semester final exams.

To me, this is the weak link in the program.  I understand Penn Foster College has many, many thousands of students.  However, waiting for a grade for more than a month is really derailing my plans to finish with this semester and transfer to another school.  I guess I could just enroll at another institution, but I want to bring these 17 credits with me when I do enroll.  It will save me time (in theory…it depend on how long I’m waiting for my Penn Foster College grades!) and money.

I’m still trying to decide from one of the Big Three (Excelsior, Charter Oak State College and Thomas Edison State College).  If I can transfer in the amount of credit I think I have (about 107 credit hours, but with no upper-level credit), I truly feel I can earn my bachelor degree before the end of the year.

Hopefully, I’ll be getting a (passing) grade this week.
