My Penn Foster College Experience

This is Terry's account of how he got started at Penn Foster College, as well as his ongoing studies towards his online Marketing degree. Read about the various pitfalls of balancing homework with family, as well as his two jobs, personal life, and volunteer work.

Narrative Essay: Graded!

After exactly one month and one day of waiting, I finally received a grade for my Narrative Essay.  It turns out it was worth the wait.  I scored a 90!

I also received something else that I did not get following my first essay for this course:  feedback from the instructor.  A .pdf copy of my essay was sent to me with instructor comments and a detailed explanation of why I received the grade I got.

Most of the notes on my essay from the instructor had to do with formatting issues, such as not using quotation marks around a quote.  I was actually paraphrasing, so I don’t think the particular sentence actually required a quote, but perhaps they misunderstood what I was going for.   There were also notes like “every time you start a new line of dialog begin a new paragraph.”   I did have five points deducted for using numerals rather than spelling out numbers of less than 100.  Mind you, there is nothing about this particular rule in my study materials.  The final critique from the instructor:  “Great story!”  Well, I can certainly live with that…and a score of 90.

Since it took about a month to receive a grade on this essay, I’m going to attempt to really speed things along this week.  It is my goal to write my next two essays and submit them both next weekend.  Once that is done, I need to start cramming for my semester final exams.  Those have me more worried than the essays.  I haven’t so much as looked at some of this material in many, many months.  In some cases, it will almost be like I am learning the material all over again.  Hopefully, it will all come back to me once I start reviewing the courses.

Up next:  the Reflective Essay writing assignment.  I have already finished the textbook portion of this assignment, so now it’s just a matter of writing it.  I think I can at least write a rough draft over the next day or two, while I start the reading assignments for the final assignment, the Persuasive Essay.

It’s going to be a lot of work, but this is it.  It’s all coming to an end.  Finally.
