My Penn Foster College Experience

This is Terry's account of how he got started at Penn Foster College, as well as his ongoing studies towards his online Marketing degree. Read about the various pitfalls of balancing homework with family, as well as his two jobs, personal life, and volunteer work.

Changes since I started studying at Penn Foster

How long have I been stuck in Semester One at Penn Foster College?  If the changes they have made to their associate degree programs are any indication, I’ve been dragging out this semester way too long.

First of all, when I enrolled in Education Direct (that’s what Penn Foster used to be called), the program was called the Associate in Specialized Business Degree with an Option in Marketing.  Whew, that’s a mouthful!  Now, it’s simply called the Associate of Science in Marketing.  Penn Foster has also added a new AS program:  Computer Information Systems.

The courses in my program are a bit different now, too.  Right now I’m working on my English Composition course, but Penn Foster has now moved that course to Semester Two.  I’m not really sure what would happen if I stuck around for a second semester.  Also, students now have a choice of one of three electives during the first semester:  Essentials of Psychology, Readings in World Civilizations or Foundations of Political Science.  I would have much rather taken one of those courses than English Composition.

Semesters Two and Three each have six courses, but Semester Four only has five courses.  All courses in Semesters Two Through Four are worth three credit hours each.

I still like what I see in the Penn Foster AS in Marketing course.  If time were not an object, I would work my way through the rest of these courses, but since I’m trying to rack up these credits as quickly as possible, CLEP and DANTES exams are in my future.

The tuition is also a bit different now.  For one thing, it is higher, but still a good bargain.  There are three payment options at Penn Foster College:  Payment in Full, for $875 for Semester One; the automatic payment plan for $900, in which monthly payments are automatically deducted from a debit or credit card or bank account, or the standard payment plan for $960.  In the standard plan, Penn Foster sends a payment book and the payments are mailed to the college by the student.  I always made my payments online, but I guess I did something similar to the standard payment plan.

It’s time to wrap this thing up, before Penn Foster College changes the name of my program again…or eliminates it altogether.

Hello TC,

As you are a veteran writer, I wonder if I might ask you...

I started my Associate in Specialized Business Degree with an Option in Marketing with International Correspondence Schools, before it was even Education Direct. This was in the early 90's, and I then stopped the course altogether as I mulled through a failed marriage. A relationship,  one child and a career in marketing later I decided to get going again, and I contacted the company again (now Education Direct). They agreed that if I paid for the course again, I could rejoin where I left off, they would give me credits for all the courses which were still relevant, and I would have to repeat all courses which had been upgraded. I agreed to this, and one extension (once again, paid) later and another change of name to Penn Foster, I have now completed the entire Associate degree course. I completed my final proctored exam in March 2007 - a fact which makes me very proud - but to date I still haven't received either the transcript or the degree, even after much communication with Penn Foster. I live in East Africa so it's quite expensive to keep calling the States.

Having waited since March, and e-mailed Student Services incessantly about this (replies like 'it's been mailed' then 'oh, sorry, it hasn't been mailed, i'll put in the application for it to be printed, then it'll take 4-6 weeks to be mailed' to 'oh, in fact when i said i'd put in the application for it to be mailed, it wasn't, so i've put in another application now, wait 4-6 weeks' and 'you'll just have to wait')...  here we are in August.

Would you happen to know any other way for me to get any joy out of Penn Foster? My experience with this college has been bumpy but well worth the experience, and I really don't want it to end like this.

Hello, it is me again!

It would seem that my patience is the only thing lacking here. I received my degree in this morning's post, and I'm sure that I am the happiest woman in Kenya right now.

I hope that my story has not put anyone off... I am still thinking of re-applying to do another degree with Penn Foster, but I haven't decided which one to try for.

To all those online students to whom life hasn't been smooth sailing, my advice is KEEP AT IT. The feeling when you succeed is STUPENDOUS!

With best wishes
