I’m not sure how many times you’ve moved in your life, but
I’ve moved a lot. Since I’ve been married (April will be 19 years) we’ve moved
fourteen times. That’s right; I’ve lived in FOURTEEN different homes in 19
years.
When you move you usually break something you love, or lose
your favorite blanket (and then find it during your next move a few years
later). Today I found out that my recent move caused me to lose something near
and dear to my heart.
As a child I hated to read and my distain for reading continued
into my teens until my mom gave me a romance novel to read on a busride.
Suddenly I realized that I could be swept away from life and taken into a whole
other world just by opening the pages of a book. I had finally found my warm
fuzzy…you know, that thing that makes you feel all squishy inside.
After I had met my husband (at the time he was still just
some guy I had met) my mom gave me one of her favorite books written by an
author named LaVyrle Spencer, Bittersweet. It quickly became one of my
favorite books.
Tonight when I went into the garage, I searched for one of
my many boxes of books, but they were nowhere to be found. I had to do a quick
mental check; did we move my book boxes? Since my first married move I’ve been
lugging around my books with me, and over the years I’ve gone from one box to
about five boxes. I suddenly realized that I hadn’t seen any boxes that said
books other than the recipe books I packed myself. Since my husband packed the
garage, where my books had been stored in their boxes, I asked him…okay…I asked
him in an accusing tone, where my books were. From the look on his face I knew
that he was dreading the day I asked that question.
I’m not sure if he got rid of them because he was tired of
lugging them around from place to place, or if they were ruined or if he marked
the box wrong and it went to Goodwill. All I know is that my books are gone and
there’s not one book left (other than the ones I packed) for me to put on my
bookshelves. I take that back…he did keep my Ann B. Davis autographed copy of The
Brady Bunch Cookbook.
I’ve been upset tonight so I buried my head in my study
guide and finally finished the Alcohol portion of the course. I’m happy to say
that I got 100% on the exam, so I guess the night is ending on a positive note.
