Today was my son’s first day with the home school group, and
my first few hours of free time in a long time. I’d love to say that I studied
until my brain burst, but that wouldn’t be true. Sadly I spent my time cleaning
our old house. However, my son had an exceptional day with his home school group.
When I picked him up today, he was absolutely thrilled with
his day. He met some new kids and had a great time learning. We even played
some foosball before we left the community center. He beat me, but only by one
point.
To be honest, I was a little jealous of my son today. He
actually got to learn something. He didn’t have to clean anything. He didn’t
have to pick up prescriptions or cook any meals. He just had to sit and learn.
Oh how I wish I could do that. For a moment I missed being in a classroom. It
wasn’t exactly the classroom setting that I missed, but the requirements. When
you’re in a classroom setting you’re required to do your work by a certain time
and your work is turned into a teacher.
As much as I love the freedom distance education has
provided me, it’s also got a few downfalls. At times, it’s a little too convenient.
I promised myself that I would spend Wednesdays studying while my son went to
his classes, yet I put that off and took care of another responsibility
instead. There is no deadline for turning in my assignments. Well, there is,
but I can always buy more time if I need it. So I asked myself, is distance
education a little too convenient? It took me about a minute to answer, yes…but,
I wouldn’t have it any other way. I need my studies to be flexible for my
family’s sake and for my own. As a domestic goddess, I have a ton of
responsibilities, and my education has to bend around my everyday schedule as well as life's little (and big) challenges.
As far as next week Wednesday goes, the plan is to stay at
the community center and study. Of course I might have to challenge my son to
another game of foosball just so I can redeem myself.
