My Andrew Jackson University Experience

  • Ethical Decision Making: Done!

I am finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel with my first semestar at Andrew Jackson University.  A couple of days ago I turned in my final paper for my Ethical Decision Making course, and I am DONE!  I still haven't received a grade yet, but I'm hopeful that I did well.   My final paper for Ethical Decision Making involved interviewing three different business managers about the ethical challenges they face within their company and in their industry.  I then had to relate the ethical challenges to the material in my textbook, and determine if the companies were operating in an ethical manner.

I have one assignment left until I have completed all of the course work for my first semester.  It is a research paper for my English Composition II course.  I spent most of the night last night working on my research and tonight I am writing my paper. I plan to do a rough draft tonight and then tomorrow I will clean it up a bit, make sure it is formatted correctly and then turn it in.

I have already scheduled my final exams for all three courses.  I will be taking one exam each night next Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.  Each exam is 1 1/2 to 2 hours in length.  I also have to read the book "The Prince" by Nicco Machiavelli prior to taking my English Comp II final exam, as the exam is based entirely on the book.  So much for "easy" online exams!

By next Friday, I will have successfully completed Semester One at Andrew Jackson University.  It has been a long difficult road for me, and hopefully all of the work, late nights and long weekends will be worth it when all is said and done.

  • Survey of Communication: Done!

I started off the weekend incredibly stressed out.  Would I be able to finish the work I need to do in order to complete this semester at AJU by May 22nd?  Honestly, I was having my doubts.  Now, it all seems possible.

I turned in my Communications journal and scored a 100.  I also completed my final paper for the course.  It was a study of the communications theories present in the film "Pulp Fiction".  Watching the movie was the best part of the assignment.  Writing the paper was grueling.  I have not received my grade yet, but I am hoping for the best.

In either case, I am finished with Survey of Communications.  All that is left is to take the final, proctored online exam.  I am working on a definition essay for English Composition II tonight, and I have a few other assignment to finish for that course as well.  I hope to complete them all this week.  I have one final paper left for the Ethics course, and I hope to complete that on Monday.  The coursework and final exams must be finished by May 22nd, which gives me not quite three weeks, but I think I will be able to do it.

It finally seems like everything is coming together!

  • Working through Student Burnout

I have until May 22nd to finish my current semester at Andrew Jackson University.  Right now, I am furiously working on my final course assignments in each of my three courses.

I am wrapping up a journal and a final paper for my Survey of Communications course; writing a final paper for my Ethics course, and I have two more papers and some reading comprehension exams in my English Composition II course.  After that, I will have to complete the final exams for all three courses.  It is a lot of work.

Looking at everything I have left to do, it seems completely overwhelming.  If I don't finish this work by May 22nd, I will automatically fail all three courses.  For me, that is not an option, not with all of the time, effort and work I put into these courses.  I have spent many, many late nights working on the course material.

Instead of looking at the sum of what I have left to do, I choose to split everything up into manageable chunks.  On Friday, I will work on wrapping my my Communications coursework.  On Saturday, I will work on completing my Communications paper, and on Sunday I will work on the reading comprehension exams for my English Comp II course.  I'll work on finishing the final 12-page paper next week.  That should give me enough time to study for and schedule the final exams for all three courses.

On the one hand, I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel.  On the other, I am really starting to feel burned out.  This is the hardest I have worked for 9 credit hours, ever.  Hopefully, within three weeks time I can look back and say that I successfully completed the semester at AJU.

  • My First Semester at AJU May be My Last

Nothing has been decided for certain yet, but my first semester at Andrew Jackson University may be my last.

It's not that I'm not happy with AJU.  The courses, the text books, the customer service...they have all been first rate.  The rigor of the program is as stiff as any I have experienced at any brick-and-mortar, regionally accredited institution.  The degree program is exactly what I had been looking for during my years of searching for an online program.  So, why am I thinking of leaving?

There are a few reasons, actually.  They have everything to do with me, and little to do with Andrew Jackson University.

    1.  I am getting burned out, big time.  The number of hours I have had to put into the program are taking me away from time I would otherwise spend with my wife and son.  My studies at Penn Foster College were completely self-paced, meaning I could take time off from my studies if I needed to.  Not so at AJU.  You can study at your own pace with AJU, meaning you can study as fast as you want, but you must be finished with each semester by a particular date.  That has meant some long weekends and some late nights for me, considering my work schedule.

    2.  At the pace I'm going, I won't get my degree for about a year and a half.  This is a big one for me, because I really want to finish as quickly as possible.  I'm not in a race, but I have been working on my BA for about 4 years now, and I just want to wrap this thing up already.

    3.  My family is losing patience.  It is important to have the support of your family when you are studying for a degree by distance learning.  My family IS supportive, but they have also taken a backseat to my studies for going on 4 years now.  They want their husband and father back.

    4.  I have my eye on several different graduate programs.  Many of them require an undergrad degree from a regionally accredited school.  AJU is nationally accredited.

At this point, my best bet may be to wrap up my current semesters at both AJU and PFC, and then transfer all credits to a school like Excelsior College.  I could probably test out of all of my remaining course requirements and earn my degree much faster.  I know I would not have to spend nearly as much time studying.  It's not that I'm looking for "and easy way out", but rather the quickest path to completion.  I have worked pretty darned hard the past four years.  It's time for me to finish.

I guess I'll know where I stand after I finish the current semester and get a credit evaluation done at Excelsior.  AJU is a great school.  I recommend it highly.  However, we all have a degree program that works best for each of us, Perhaps this wasn't the right program at the right time, for my particular situation.  We'll see.

  • Semester One: Almost Done!

It has been awhile since I have posted to my Andrew Jackson University Experience blog.  The main reason for this is that I have found while it is one thing to blog about my studies at AJU, it does not help me complete my studies, so I have been hammering away at finishing my Semester One course.

The "nose to the grindstone" approach has paid off.  I am basically on my final assignments for two of my three courses, and I should finish the remaining lessons in my English Composition II course this week.

For my final assignment in my Ethics course, I need to interview three managers at different businesses about the ethical issues they deal with on the job and in their industry.  The final assignment in my Communications course consists of watching a movie from a list and detailing the differnt communications issues present in the movie.  These are major Hollywood movies, so this assignment should be enjoyable.  I'd like to pick a movie I haven't seen yet, so it will be an assignment I'm actually looking forward to.

The remaining lessons in my English Composition II course involve writing a compare and contrast essay, reading some essays and finishing writing assignments involved with those, and doing an assignment concerning doing research at a library.  My final assignment in the English Composition II course is a 10-12 page research paper.  I like writing, so I don't think finishing these assignments will be a major issue.

After that, I'll have to start studying for my final exams, which must be completed by May 22nd.  That gives me just about a month to study and take the final exams. After the exams, I'll be ready to select my couses for Semester Two.  I'm going to concentrate on finishing my General Education credits first, as those make up the bulk of what I need to finish to get my degree.  I have already completed most of the credits I need for the Communications major.

I have also been spending some time looking ahead to my graduate studies, although that might seem a little premature.  I haven't decided if I will complete all of my requirements for my BA through AJU, or finish my associate degree at AJU and then transfer my credits to a college like American Military University, which is both regionally and nationally accredited, in order to finish with a regionally accredited degree.  Doing this would give me many more options when it comes to getting into a graduate program.  Since I haven't decided which school I want to apply to for graduate study, I haven't yet decided which route to go yet.  That's OK...I still have time.
