Everyone should have a hobby.

Mine is photography. This is a “habit” I picked up in the last couple of years and it is very rewarding. Getting a good shot requires some diligence, patience, some skill, and a little bit of luck. Over time I have managed to figure out all the tricks. Some people even think I am pretty good at what I do. The best way to tell how good you are is for other people you don’t even know give you compliments on your work. That’s what happened to me recently.

Once a year I try to go to the Houston Museum of Natural Science. Several months ago I took a trip there and tried very hard to get some good shots. Most of the ones I got were average and certainly nothing to brag about. There were spots in the building that had really poor lighting. But that is one characteristic that worked to my advantage.

Last month, I was contacted by the folks at the museum and they asked me if I would allow them to use one of my photos. I agreed. That photo was in the December issue of their blog. http://blog.hmns.org/?p=2628

I also recently bought some new lenses for my camera. One of them was a ‘macro’ lens. This allows me to take photos up close and with a greater level of detail than other lenses. A few minutes after it was delivered, I had it installed on the camera and took a few “practice” shots. Then I got down to business. This is one of the first ones I took with it.
