My Norwich University Experience

We Must Master Something

A happy belated Thanksgiving to all of you.  I spent the day eating a non-traditional dinner.  We had Italian food.  It was great.  It’s nice to do something different for a change.

In my downtime between classes, I have been listening to several education-based podcasts.  And one thing that I always knew, but was confirmed over and over again through listening to these podcasts is that we should all try to master something.

I have always thought that an undergraduate degree was a very broad delivery of a very broad subject. In my case, it was Management.  I firmly believe that while the MBA is much more focused on a core set of topics, it’s still filled with some broad information.  Something I’ve been trying to do since I started was to take all my years of working in the high-tech industry and combine it with one or two aspects of my college work and become as much of an expert at those one or two things as I possibly can.

With two classes left, I am trying to narrow down my options as far as what to really focus on.  I am inclined to lean toward operations management as that seems to play more of a role in what I do now than ever before.  And while I knew a little about it before the MBA program, I was really challenged with the class that just ended.  There is so much to learn.  As I stated previously, we learned a ton of stuff, but I walked away knowing there was so much more.  We just touched the surface.

I think the motto Master Something is a good one.  It’s a good motto for life itself.  We all should have the goal of being as broadly educated in as many topics as we can, but we must specialize in something.

Back to the drawing board…

Coming soon:  I will be reviewing some of the more interesting education-related podcasts that I am sure some of you might enjoy as well.
