My Norwich University Experience

Program Specialization

It’s time to think “specialization”.  By that I am referring to seminar six in my MBA program at Norwich.  Seminar six is where students pick their program specialization class.  My choices are E-Commerce, International Business, Organizational Leadership, or Project Management.  Here is the logic I’ve put together thus far:

I want to avoid the E-Commerce class.  I have a minor in that with my undergraduate degree I earned at Kaplan University.  It’s a good specialization to have if you are a programmer, developer, or have some direct relation to those particular skill sets.  I don’t plan on taking my career in that direction.

International Business sounds very interesting to me.   The purpose of this class is to learn the concepts and skills needed to manage businesses operating in a global marketplace. Globalization is something that is happening now.  It cannot be stopped.  Businesses that do not embrace globalization will eventually disappear, surrendering to those businesses that acted faster and more efficiently.  Understanding how all of that works is important.

Organizational Leadership is tied with Project Management at the top of my list.  I have always been interested in this topic.  Being a manager of large teams, it always helps to know all aspects of how to lead, what makes people tick, change management, and gleaning success from the application of those methods.

Project Management is the most intriguing.  This is a highly-complex subject.  This class will focus on a holistic approach to project management. The course deals with planning, scheduling, organizing, and controlling projects. The thing is that when I am browsing job sites like Monster.com or Dice.com, the number of project manager jobs far outweighs the other positions.  There is always a need for project managers.  They also make good money.  Making this class my specialty course will not only teach me a lot of new material, but could be the key for continued employment.
