My Norwich University Experience

Strategic Marketing Management

Today is the first day of Strategic Marketing Management!  Also, when I am done with this class, I will be half way through my MBA program!

In this term, we will take the view of a senior marketing executive in a multi-national corporation. We begin with a strategic high-level view of marketing by understanding the differences and relationship between business and marketing strategy. How management measures the financial performance of marketing programs is a critical skill that we will cover.  We will then apply what we learn to the identification and development of market opportunities and the evaluation of various strategic approaches for growth in different market situations that we will come to know very well.

I am not a “marketing guy” by discipline, but I love marketing.  I really like to analyze the psychology behind getting people to buy things.  Also, I like to analyze why people buy things (or why people don’t buy things).  It’s fascinating stuff to me.

I know I’ve mentioned in previous posts over the last several months that one of the keys to being successful in any topic is to put forth the extra effort and read outside materials that are not provided by the school.  It’s always a good thing to get some books on the topic you are studying.  You will need some outside references for your papers and you will always learn something new that might not be covered in the textbook.  I do this with every class I take.

In an effort to further my education in marketing, I have been hitting the local Half Price Books stores to pick up any of the titles by Seth Godin.   This guy is pretty cool and puts a spin on marketing that I have never experienced.  You might want to check out his books.  Even if you are not into marketing, the material is still very entertaining and informative.
