I saw your post on your Kaplan University experience. I was wondering if you had any problems with them at all. Also, when you left Kaplan, did your credits transfer to the other college fine? And do employers look at the degree favorably.
Thanks for the comments. I had little to no problems with Kaplan. Other than one rogue instructor who graded papers on APA consistency as opposed to the content of the class (which I have documented in my Kaplan blog before), I had almost no problems. I really enjoyed my time at Kaplan. If I had to do all over again, I would have no problems picking them or recommending them to other people (which I have also done before).
My credits earned at Kaplan did NOT transfer. This is because I was going from an undergraduate program to a graduate program. Credits earned in these situations are pretty much exclusive. However, this does bring up a good point that I have not heard a lot of people talk about lately. That’s the topic of transfer credits.
There are many scenarios where you might get some credits transferred from one school to the next, but with all the research I’ve done and some of the things I have experienced, a general rule of thumb is DO NOT expect to be able to transfer anything (especially when attending an online school). Keep in mind that there are exceptions to every rule, but this is just a good thing to keep in mind. If you expect the worst, you won’t be disappointed. If you end up getting to transfer some credits, you’ll be happy!
How employers look at the degree is another thing that is going to differ from employer to employer. The degree you get will also be a factor. If you are a manager of people or projects and get a degree in Underwater Basket Weaving, some employers won’t give you the time of day. But in general, a good employer will embrace your education. My company does and I am thankful for that. I don’t know if it will get me anywhere in my own company. I may have to look to the outside. My company paid for a large percentage of my undergrad, so I know they love education and professional development.
Good luck in your studies!
