People who are aware of my educational pursuits (friends, co-workers, etc…) are pretty envious of my accomplishments. I constantly have people come up to me and ask me how school is going, how long I have left, and what I think about distance education. When I tell them that I am about a year and a half away from my MBA (my third college degree), some ask what my educational goals are once that is complete.
I have spend some time thinking about this in the last few months, and I’ve pretty much decided that I don’t want to go after my doctorate degree. In my line of work, there is no need for it. I am not sure how I would benefit. Having a MBA in my field is pretty much the top of the mountain. Once that is complete, I will be satisfied that I have done my due diligence in terms of education, and could quite possibly leave it at that.
If there is one thing I would love to do after my MBA is complete is to get a M.A. in Economics. I am a self-proclaimed armchair economist, and love reading about economics and society. It would be a degree I would get strictly for personal fulfillment and to enhance my knowledge in a subject that I am “entertained” by. The problem is that from all the research I’ve done regarding online degrees in Economics, the only one I found was the
B.S. in Economics from Strayer University.
Perhaps there are certain subjects that are not conducive to the online environment yet. Maybe economics is one of those. I am hoping that as distance education evolves, a quality M.A. program will become available by the time I complete my MBA. I think that as time goes on, more types of programs will open up at different schools around the country. I also see more traditional brick-and-mortar schools expanding their online programs. So perhaps an online degree in economics is not out of the question.
