I do a lot of writing about Kaplan University. Most of it is about my experiences that have happened on a weekly, monthly or quarterly basis. A lot of people who contribute to eLearners do a great job of providing advice to others about how going back to school is such a great thing (if you are prepared to accept the challenge). But I recently came across a story about someone else who had a challenge.
Kaplan recently held commencement for almost 1800 online graduates. I am sure this was a huge deal for everyone involved. I wasn’t planning on attending mine, but after reading this story, I might have a change of heart.
Graduate Mary B. Till, who was diagnosed with a debilitating gastrointestinal disease half way through her degree program, commended Kaplan for providing her with a unique opportunity to complete her course work. She shared her story with fellow graduates during the summer commencement ceremony at the Symphony Center on Saturday where she said her graduation was a culmination of many dreams.
Click here to read the story…I read a lot of articles and press releases about Kaplan. After all, the smart person wants to know everything they can about the institution they attend. We all know about the convenience that distance learning offers. We know about the flexibility. This article not only touches on that, but it also explains what one person can do if given the proper tools to get the job done…even when faced with a tremendous adversity.
Not only did Mary Till overcome adversity to earn the degree, she did it in style with a 4.0 GPA. This is a great story and just goes to show you that with some dedication and determination, no amount of adversity is too much to overcome when you have your heart set on a goal.
As a side note, I also recognized one of my former instructors, Jim DeSeno as receiving an excellence award for his outstanding efforts.
