I do a lot of web surfing. I do it to break up the routine between assignments, taking a break at work, and a multitude of other reasons. In doing so, I come across a lot of tools that can be of use to online learners. I try to share tools and resources I find in hopes that someone can get some use out of them. I have found two pretty good resources lately.
The first one is Open Office. This is a FREE replacement for Microsoft Office. I remember a few years ago when I first looked at this program for Linux. It was very primitive in nature, and had almost no functionality. It certainly didn't look or act like anything Microsoft would put out. Oh how times have changed.
I installed this thing and I am absolutely amazed by the features this thing has. Not only does it have all the functionality of the Microsoft equivalents, but it looks very nice and professional. Even better, it is FREE.
As a matter of fact, I am writing this post with the 'Open Office Writer' program that comes with it. It's their version of Microsoft Word. And if I didn't know I was using Open Office, I would not be able to tell the difference.
I know that as a student, there are times where we can get some of the required tools such as Microsoft Office for a deep discount. I think that's great. But if you want to try out something else without spending ANY money, I would urge you to look at Open Office.
The second site I wanted to refer you to is Spark Notes. Spark Notes is like an online version of Cliff Notes, but better. They have guides on all the important topics that we as students might need to research. They have tons of math reference books. They also have history, literature, science, SAT preparation, and more. If you stink at math (like me), this will be a good site to refer to.
These two items are some of the most exciting things that I've found lately, and I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.
