According EarthDay.gov, the first Earth Day was celebrated in the year 1970. Here are some facts from that site:
- The nation's air is much cleaner today than it was in 1970 and progress will continue.
- The trend of annual loss of wetlands has been reversed.
- Restoration and redevelopment of abandoned industrial sites is accelerating.
I grew up in the late eighties, so ever since I can remember, pollution and the natural environment have been important issues in the United States and the world. I was taught to remember the three "R's": reduce, reuse, and recycle!
It's not easy to recycle in some areas of the United States. In some communities, all you have to do is leave a bin full of recyclables at the end of your driveway and a truck will pick them up for you. In other areas, you have to drive your recyclables to a designated spot. I'll bet some communities have no recycling program in place.
Distance learners can pat themselves on the back for doing their part to reduce waste! Thanks to e-Books and word processors, I'll bet that we use less paper and ink. And thanks to my online course, I don't have to make an extra trip in the car to get to campus. I take mass transit to commute home after work, open my books and laptop, and start studying!
Take the day to remind yourself about the importance of conservation and preservation. Enjoy!
