Top 5 Posts of the Week at eLearners.com - 7/27/07

Aloha everyone!

I hope everyone is doing well!  We have a really great community going here and there is always a lot of great information and stories of personal experiences that get posted every week.  I think that it's about time to point out 5 of my favorite blog posts for the week.  Who knows?  Maybe this will be a weekly occurrence!

1.)  I'll start here with Steve's post "She's doing great" on his blog, My St. Petersburg College Experience.  Steve's daughter is taking an online geometry class to help get ahead in her high school studies.  In this update we find out that she is doing well!  This post proves that people of all ages can effectively take classes online as long as they have the right amount of personal drive and support.  Congratulations to Steve's daughter, and keep up the good work!!

2.)  Terry's (tcord1964) post "College Credit for Corporate Training" on his blog, My Penn Foster College Experience reminds everyone that college credit can sometimes be obtained when and where you don't realize.  Many companies offer employee training that can also be counted for college credit.  "If you work for a nationally-known company, chances are they have had at least some of their courses evaluated for college credit."  This is definitely something that many people may overlook when working at a job that offers this fantastic service and I'm glad that Terry brought it to our attention!

I would also like to point everyone to another of Terry's blog posts.  I realize I'm sticking two into one review, but hey, this is worth mentioning.  At the very end Terry says "If there is one thing I have learned during my many years of experience in the Real World, it's that a job is "just a job"...it's not your life, and it should not define who you are as a person."  I think that everyone needs to read/think this at some point in their lives.  Remembering that there is more to life than just your job is very important, especially if you tend to let your job take over your life!

3.)  Nicoline posted "Where is the time for you?" at her blog My Capella University Experience.  If you have not once ever overextended yourself, or just been so burnt out you wanted to literally burn all of your homework and textbooks then count yourself lucky, and a complete natural at managing your time.  I have fallen prey to being overextended and it really is not pretty.  Nicoline reminds us here, that it does happen and that while, yes, it does bite, there are ways to unwind and regain some of your sanity while still keeping busy.  She also points out that another good approach to avoiding burnout is by having a healthy balance between "personal interests, work requirements, school requirements and family needs."

4.)  Cajun's post "Censoring Education Or Silencing a Fraud: Ward Churchill" at his blog My Ashford University Experience is definitely worth a read, even if it's just to get your thoughts moving.  In it, Cajun poses a few questions about expression one's opinions in an educational setting and whether or not there could/should be rules governing that.  Thoughts on that?  Go post on his blog!  Start a discussion! :-)

5.)  Scott's (WheelCipher) post "Fan Mail" at his blog My Kaplan University Experience is a response to a bit of "fan mail" that he received.  It is great to see people reaching out for help and others reaching back to provide help.  Scott provides Helen (the woman who sent the fan mail) with a wonderful and well thought out response about his experience at Kaplan University.  Thanks Scott for sharing your response to Helen with us!

Before I bring this incredibly long post to a close, I want to point out one more blog post.  I don't mean to toot my own horn here, but, well, I'm going to.  It's really, really, really, really, really, really, REALLY important to back up your data!  I can't possibly stress that enough.  I feel like if I stress it to all of you, and my family, and my friends, that maybe it'll sink in for me too!  :-P  I still haven't implemented ANY of the tips that I provided in my post "Tips for backing up your data", so if I haven't and I went through all the effort to do the research, have any of you?  So, what have you done to back up your data/take care of important information?

I want to post one more question to everyone who reads this, so just take a minute to post your answer.  What was your favorite blog post of the week, and why?

Greetings and salutations, I am your friendly neighborhood Content Manager here at eLearners.com. (I am also mom to a seemingly tireless 3-year-old girl and owner to a cat that hates me. Oh well - can't win 'em all.)

I have a bachelor's degree in computer science from Rutgers College and am thisclose to completing my master's degree in instructional design from Western Illinois University later this year.
