Even if your company doesn't offer tuition reimbursement for
the courses or degree that you are planning on pursuing, it's still a good idea
to inform your manager that you are going back to school. For one thing you'll
probably have to explain why you need to leave on time on certain days or that
you can't take on a project that requires a lot of overtime. Let them know
what's going on - most managers will respond very positively when you tell them that
you want to pursue a degree. Many companies prefer that you actually get a
degree online, since the schedule is flexible and doesn't often interfere with
work.
Companies today realize that there is great value in having
their employees pursue advanced degrees. It's getting much more difficult to
hire qualified people, and it is always easier to promote employees from
within. Consider your education an asset to them as well as yourself. Telling
your manager that you are going back to school shows that you have a commitment
to consistently improve yourself. Who knows they may offer to pay a portion of
the bill?
