Ni hao ma?

A story in today's Detroit News reports that student interest in Mandarin Chinese is on the rise and the Internet is the delivery method of choice. As China emerges as an economic powerhouse in its own right, learning the most widely spoken language in the world will give students an edge in tomorrow's global environment.

"Much of that push in the state is coming from one place: the United States-China Center for Research on Educational Excellence at Michigan State University.

This fall, the 2-year-old center will launch online language classes statewide and open three preschools in Michigan that combine Chinese and American teaching methods. They will also take local educators to the country to observe classrooms."

Interested in learning Mandarin Chinese or other in-demand languages like Arabic (the world's sixth most spoken language) or Hindi (the world's fourth most spoken language, with 182 million primary speakers in India, another rising economic superpower)?
