How Long Will It Take & When Can I Start

One of the real benefits of online education is that most colleges do not follow the two semester system of a traditional college. Under that system you would only be able to start classes in the spring and fall, and if you missed those times, or didn’t get your application in before the deadline, you would have to wait a few more months before beginning your courses.

What’s great about distance learning is that many of the online colleges follow a multi semester system of up to 8 semesters per year.  Chances are you can start working towards your degree within a few weeks of sending in your application. You also won’t have to time your application for the spring the way many students do in high school, if you want to begin taking classes in the fall. It’s also great for busy adults, because you can skip a few months of the year and just pick up later if you get too busy with work or family.

As a result of this multi-semester system, you can also finish your degree a lot faster compared to a traditional college. You can take one or two classes that last a few weeks and you’ll be on your way to a degree in a matter of months.

Tips to follow:

When evaluating a school find out exactly how many semesters they offer. The more semesters there are, the faster you will likely complete your degree.

Find out exactly how many classes or credits you need to graduate. Credits needed to complete a degree vary from degree to degree and from college to college. For example, Baker College Online offers an MBA program that requires 13 classes or 50 credits to graduate, a student could finish their MBA in as little as 15 months. Regis University’s MBA program requires only 11 classes, or 36 credits.  Students who progress through the regular curriculum can earn their MBA in 24 months, while Fast Track students at Regis can complete their degree in only 16 months by doubling up on certain courses and taking no breaks in-between sessions. As you can see, every college is slightly different in their requirements, so it’s best to evaluate several colleges before making a decision. One college may actually suit your needs better.

You should also find out what the maximum time you have to complete your degree is. Life has its ups and downs, and you might have to take a year or two off before completing your degree for a variety of reasons. Most colleges will give you several years to complete your degree, just make sure to check. The last thing you want to find out is that you have to start all over again because the courses you took a few years ago are no longer valid.

Greetings and salutations, I am your friendly neighborhood Content Director here at eLearners.com. (I am also mom to a seemingly tireless 4-year-old girl and owner to a cat that hates me. Oh well - can't win 'em all.)

I have a bachelor's degree in computer science from Rutgers College and am thisclose to completing my master's degree in instructional design from Western Illinois University later this year.
